Chaucer greatly admired Dante, whom he frequently cites and sometimes quotes in a manner that seems to show he had some parts of the Divine Comedy by heart. The prayer to the Virgin at the beginning of the Paradiso, which Dante derived from St. Bernard, seems to have been Chaucer's favorite passage in the Divine Comedy ; he quotes it in the Prioress' Tale (VII.474-80; see note in The Riverside Chaucer , p. 914) and he uses it in a purely secular sense in Tr 3 1261-67 (see note in The Riverside Chaucer , p. 1042). He adapts it for the "Invocation to the Virgin" that is part of the introduction to The Second Nun's Tale: Paradiso, Canto 33, 1-39 Dante's Letter to Can Grande contains an important explanation of the "allegorical method" of literary interpretation, which Dante apparently (the authenticity of the letter has been questioned) wanted to be used in reading his Divine Comedy , or at least the Paradiso , a copy of which he sent to Can Grande with his letter: Dante's Letter to Can Grande Chaucer also uses the account of Hugolino of Pisa (from Canto 33 of The Inferno in his Monk's Tale: Ugolino of Pisa In the Wife of Bath's Tale, Chaucer draws upon Dante's

Search all of Dante Alighieri Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is generally considered the greatest of Italian poets, and also one of the greatest poets that Western civilization has produced. His reputation is primarily based upon his magnum opus The Divine Comedy . He was active in politics during the early part of his life and took an active interest in church reform.
Dante was born in Florence, Italy, in 1265. Heir of a poor but noble family, he was one of the seven elected officials in charge of the government of Florence. Civil war was common in Florence at the time and the issues were further complicated by the question of Papal influence. In 1300, Dante along with his fellow magistrates confirmed anti-papal measures. When in 1302, the French prince acting under orders from the Pope captured power in Florence, Dante was sentenced on charges of corruption and opposition to the Church and exiled from Florence on pain of execution by burning if he ever returned.. He spent the rest of his life in exile, pining for his native city. He withdrew from active politics to a large extent and concentrated on his literary creations.
His first book was the Vita Nuova The New Life ), published in 1294, in which he relates how he fell in love with a young girl Beatrice. Though Beatrice and Dante both married other people, Dante's spiritual love for her persists and she functions as his chief Muse and inspiration.. In 1304 or shortly thereafter he published

Biografia
Biografia
Biography
Dante was born in to the oldest family of Florence in 1265. His mother died when he was five and the father when Dante was eighteen years old. Dante had an education that became his position.
Amongst many things he studied rhetoric which he had use for in both his occupations :Poet and politician. As a member of an influencial family he soon gained access to the political world of Florence. It was now he acquired his insights in the the intrigues and games of power which he later came to lash so fiercely in his great work, The Comedy.
