Dante Alighieri
Italian poet, born at Florence, 1265; died at Ravenna, Italy , 14 September, 1321. His own statement in the "Paradiso" (xxii, 112-117) that he was born when the sun was in Gemini, fixes his birthday between 18 May and 17 June. He was the son of Alighiero di Bellincione Alighieri, a notary belonging to an ancient but decadent Guelph family, by his first wife, Bella, who was possibly a daughter of Durante di Scolaio Abati, a Ghibelline noble. A few months after the poet's birth, the victory of Charles of Anjou over King Manfred at Benevento (26 February, 1266) ended the power of the empire in Italy, placed a French dynasty upon the throne of Naples, and secured the predominance of the Guelphs in Tuscany. Dante thus grew up amidst the triumphs of the Florentine democracy, in which he took some share fighting in the front rank of the Guelph cavalry at the battle of Campaldino (11 June, 1289), when the Tuscan Ghibellines were defeated by the forces of the Guelph league, of which Florence was the head. This victory was followed by a reformation of the Florentine constitution, associated with the name of Giano della Bella, a great-hearted noble who had joined the people. By the Ordinances of Justice (1293) all nobles and magnates were more strictly excluded from the government, and subjected to severe penalties for offences against plebeians. To take any part in public life, it was necessary to be enrolled in one or other of the "Arts" (the guilds in which the burghers and artisans were banded together), and accordingly Dante matriculated in the guild of physicians and apothecaries. On 6 July, 1295, he spoke in the General Council of the Commune in favour of some modification in the Ordinances of Justice after which his name is frequently found recorded as speaking or voting in the various councils of the republic.

What's new
Dante's Complete Work is now available also in PDF format and in LaTeX sources. You're welcome to report any problem or error you may encounter with them.
I've noticed that the guestbook was down for some time, due to a little technical problem which is now fixed. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Furthermore, as you may notice looking at the bottom of this page, a new minimalistic counter is now implemented, since the previous one was also not working anymore. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep track of the previous counter value, so we're starting from again.
In order to avoid mass email spamming, I've modified all the email addresses in the site so that now they're in the form "name (at) greatdante (dot) net". Of course, you just need to substitute @ for (at) and . for (dot). I'm sorry for the additional trouble, but email spamming was becoming really too heavy during the last months.
I've moved to the USA to attend abroad a term of my Master degree course. This means I'll probably be slower when answering your inquiries and some of them will be delayed till I'll be able to look up my books about Dante which I couldn't bring here. This will last approximately until the end of December. Sorry in advance for any inconvenience, but please keep visiting my site and sending comments and questions!

What is Dante?
Dante is a circuit-level firewall/proxy that can be used to provide convenient and secure network connectivity to a wide range of hosts while requiring only the server Dante runs on to have external network connectivity. Once installed, Dante can in most cases be made transparent to the clients while offering detailed access control and logging facilities to the server administrator. Developed by Inferno Nettverk A/S, Dante usually comes installed as part of a bigger Inferno Nettverk firewall system. Inferno Nettverk has however decided to also offer it separately available via FTP . The Dante version provided via FTP is under a BSD/CMU-type license and comes with complete source code, for your convenience and verification. Inferno Nettverk also provides commercial services related to Dante. These services include support, customised installations/tuning of Dante, development, porting and embedding. For more information about support, see the Dante support page or contact sales@inet.no

THIS EXHIBITION presents Renaissance editions of Dante's Divine Comedy from the John A. Zahm, C.S.C. , Dante Collection at the University of Notre Dame , together with selected treasures from The Newberry Library . The Zahm collection ranks among the top Dante collections in North America. Purchased for the most part by Zahm in 1902 from the Italian Dantophile Giulio Acquaticci, the 15th- and 16th- century imprints presented here form the heart of Zahm's collection, which totals nearly 3,000 volumes, including rare editions and critical studies from the Renaissance to the present. The nine incunable editions and nearly complete series of 16th-century imprints featured in this exhibit constitute essential primary sources for both the history of Dante's reception during the Renaissance and the early history of the printed book. The concentrated Dante collection at Notre Dame is nicely complemented by the wide-ranging holdings of The Newberry Library in Renaissance literature and history, and especially for the history of printing and publishing. These two rich and varied collections have often been used by Dantists in the Midwest and from abroad. The complementarity of the collections is mirrored in the formal cooperation of Notre Dame and The Newberry Library through the consortium of The Newberry Library Center for Renaissance Studies, of which Notre Dame has been an active member since 1983. The exhibit was originally held at the Department of Special Collections, University Libraries, University of Notre Dame, October 15 - December 15, 1993 and the Newberry Library between 15 April - 15 June, 1994, and has been produced in expanded form for Internet publication by a collaboration between the William and Katherine

Dante's Inferno Test - Impurity, Sin... and Damnation
A heavy thunder breaks the deep lethargy within your head....
...causing you to upstart suddenly, like a person who by force is awakened. Before you stands an enormous gate with an inscription that reads:
"Through me the way into the suffering city,
Through me the way to the eternal pain,
Through me the way that runs among the lost.
Justice urged on my high artificer;
My maker was divine authority,
The highest wisdom, and the primal love.
Before me nothing but eternal things were made,
And I endure eternally.
Abandon every hope, ye who enter here."
Welcome to the Dante's Inferno Hell Test. This test, sponsored by the 4degreez.com community (the fine people who brought you the famous Personality Disorder Test ), is based on the description of Hell found in Dante's Divine Comedy. Answer the questions below as honestly as you can and discover your fate. Based on your answers, your purity will be judged and you will be banished to the appropriate level of hell. Abandon all hope. After ten minutes this test will expire, so do not delay.

**1/2 (PG-13) Harry Dalton: Pierce Brosnan
Rachel Wando: Linda Hamilton
Lauren Wando: Jamie Renee Smith
Graham Wando: Jeremy Foley
Ruth: Elizabeth Hoffman
Paul Dreyfus: Charles Hallahan Directed by Roger Donaldson . Written by Leslie Bohem . Running time: 112 minutes. Rated PG-13 (for disaster-related peril and gore). By Roger Ebert ``Dante's Peak'' is constructed about as skillfully as a disaster movie can be, and there were times when I found it working for me, sort of. But hasn't this genre pretty much been played out to the point of exhaustion? Once you know the premise (volcano, tornado, killer bees) you can guess the story line. Starting in this case with a volcano, we know there will be: Ominous portents of doom on a seemingly ordinary day, such as people being boiled alive in a hot springs, too many dead trees in the middle of summer and alarming seismic activity. Everyday folks going about their business, in this case the Dante's Peak Pioneer Day Festival, at which the mayor (Linda Hamilton) accepts the town's Money magazine award as the ``second-best place to live in America.'' Arrival of scientists, including (a) hero scientist, played here by Pierce Brosnan, and (b) pooh-pooh scientist, played by Charles Hallahan, whose job is to dismiss the hero scientist's concerns and tell everyone there is no need for alarm.
