Curwood, James Oliver, 9 linear ft., 1 v. [outsize], and 1 oversize folder. James Oliver Curwood was a novelist from Owosso, Michigan, and a member of the Michigan Conservation Commission. He was very visible in the conservation movement. His papers include correspondence, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, manuscripts of publications, copies of books, and miscellanea; also included is material concerning his literary activities; the writing and production of motion pictures; his promotion of conservation causes, especially forest fire prevention, deer herd management, and the campaign against water pollution; and his work with the Conservation Commission, particularly his disputes with the Michigan Department of Conservation, Governor Alexander J. Groesbeck, and state director of conservation, John Baird; also photographs; and copies of correspondence collected by Ivan Conger. Inscribed by the author in each volume, dedicated to Malkan A. Pearlman, a contributor to the publication. Published over a span of a decade (completed after 1981), this monumental work is an authority on the Leviathon. Profusely illustrated with numerous photos of the ship, her crew, advertisements, facsimiles of historic documents, oil paintings, watercolors, engravings, etc. Maroon hardcover cloth bindings, with a modicum of shelfwear, and slightly dust-soiled on the top edge. One volume has 4 scotch tape page markers, which indicate where Pearlman was mentioned. A clean, tight and attractive set of this inscribed association publication. Very good+ condition. Item #

Approx 6.5" x 3.75" image mounted on card stock; showing a covered wagon, 4 men sitting taking coffee or spirits and victuals, a dog tied to the wagon, and a man possibly wearing a Civil War era hat standing next to 2 horses. There is a large pot suspended over unburned logs, with rifles, doctor's or surveyor's bags? top-hat, travel trunks, and cooking gear in view. The camp is made in a wooded area with sizable pine, and steep hills in background. A photo of excellent quality; the large wooden box the men are using as a dining table appears to be stamped "Reese Bros. Druggists." Unknown date; circa 1875. Photographer, location and title of image also unidentified. Very good condition.
