61. The Victoria Cross (in India, 1912-47)
The Victoria Cross. (in India). Subadar Major Umrao Singh, VC (India). From 1912to 1947, the following Indian soldiers were awarded the Victoria Cross
http://faculty.winthrop.edu/haynese/india/medals/VC/IndVC.html
The Victoria Cross (in India) Until 1912, the Victoria Cross could not be awarded to Indian members of the Indian Army and was restricted for award only to Europeans (and occasional "Anglo-Indians") in the Indian Army and, with few exceptions, to Europeans in general. While this fact should not diminish the bravery of the 95 (or is it 101?) English officers who won the award for services with Indian Army Regiments before that date. (There is considerable confusion over the numbver of VCs awarded to H.E.I.C./Indian Army officers before 1912 and numbers range from 95 to 101; this is linked to the inevitable confusion of the fairly common practice of "attached" or "seconded" service.) For Indian soldiers, who were not allowed the VC, theolder Indian Order of Merit was the award "of choice" to reward bravery before 1912 when (1837-1911) 42 first class IOMs were alwards (one with a special bar), 130 second class, and 2740 third class. The Royal Warrant of 21 October 1911 (published in the London Gazette of 12 November 1911, p. 9369, but not publically announced in India until the coronantion durbar in Delhi the following month) destroyed the "color bar" for Victoria Cross awards in the Indian Army and allowed Indians to receive this decoration. Accordingly, the first class of the Indian Order of Merit was terminated by Army Order No. 757 of 3 August 1912 (w.e.f. 12 December 1911) and the remaining classes were renumbered.

Cross Country / Nordic Skiing
Victoria has a huge area of alpine country suitable for cross country skiing in winter, greater than the European Alps. The very best of this, is the sprawling expanse of hills, valleys and broad ridges of the Bogong High Plains. A number of mountains rise out of this plain and the area is dotted with historical cattle men's huts. This area is easily accessible from Falls Creek. Falls Creek resort itself has the unique Nordic Bowl. This is a sheltered area of flat and gentle slopes ideal for cross country ski learning and tuition and cross country race training. It is also a rallying point for ski tourers heading out into the national park. From Windy Corner, it is an easy ski of less than one kilometer to the Nordic Bowl. Within the resort there is a network of 20 km of groomed cross country trails and this is the key location in Victoria for cross country ski racing. The total groomed trails available from Falls Creek is between 30-60 km at any given time. Falls Creek is also the site of Australia's premier international cross country skiing event. The

Exhibits and Firearms
The Victoria Cross When was the VC instituted ?
The Victoria Cross was instituted by a Royal Warrant dated 29 January 1856, but was made retrospective to the autumn of 1854 to cover the period of the Crimean War. Who designed the VC ?
Prince Albert, the Prince Consort was much involved in the decision to institute the Victoria Cross - but the popular idea that the Prince designed the Cross is not supported in any of the surviving documents. It is thought that the manufacturers were responsible for the design. However, it was Queen Victoria who chose the inscription on the obverse. Who makes the VC ?
Hancocks (Jewellers) Ltd, London, have made all the Victoria Crosses since the inception of the award. What is the VC made of?

635 Private Samuel Parkes, V.C.
Born in WinningtonTamworth, Staffordshire, in 1813 the son of Thomas and Lydia Parkes, Samuel was baptised at St Ethrida’s Church, Tamworth on 24th December 1815. Parkes enlisted into the 4th Queen's Own Light Dragoons at his home town on 28th July 1831, when he was described as aged 18, 6 feet 2 inches tall with light brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. Prior to military service, he was described as being a labourer. He served with the Regiment in India for 9 years and 5 months, leaving Bombay on 28th December 1841. Three months later, he disembarked from the "Repulse" with the Regiment on its way to quarters in Canterbury. Their red uniforms were replaced with blue ones in 1842, and it was in this uniform that the Regiment marched to South and West Wales to keep civil order during the so-called "Rebecca Riots". The turnpike roads which commanded a toll were deeply unpopular, and an organisation known as "Rebecca and her daughters" grew up. Disguised in women's clothing, they preached violence, creating unrest by destroying buildings and tool gates. One of the Troops was thanked by the Duke of Wellington for saving the workhouse at Carmarthen. After service in Ireland, once again keeping civil Order. On 25th October 1854 at Balaklava, Parkes was acting as Orderly to Lord George Paget, the Commanding Officer of the 4th Queen's Own Light Dragoons, who referred to him as "a fine specimen of an Englishman". In this role, Parkes needed to stay close to both Paget and Trumpeter Hugh Crawford who relayed the Commanding Officer's orders to the troops. During the Charge of the Light Brigade, the 4th Light Dragoons reached the Russian guns where savage hand to hand fighting was taking place. Parkes rode past his Colonel shouting anxiously "Where's my chief? Who's seen the Colonel?" Paget replied "here I am, my boy, I'm all right" Parkes then rejoined his Colonel and the Trumpeter.

Victoria Cross
The Victoria Cross is the highest award for acts of bravery in wartime. It was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria and made retrospective to 1854 to cover the period of the Crimea War. It is possible for any serviceman to obtain this award. The Victoria Cross is designed in the form of the Maltese Cross, in the centre of the medal is a lion guardant standing upon the Royal Crown. The words "For Valour" are inscribed below. The Victoria Cross is suspended from a bar by a red ribbon. On the reverse of the cross the date of the act of bravery is inscribed, along with the name, rank and unit of the recipient. The Australian War Memorial displays 59 Victoria Crosses, the largest publicly held collection in the world. The Victoria Crosses are displayed together in the Memorial's Hall of Valour. These VC's have been donated, or loaned, to the Memorial by individuals, families, or by unit associations, to be displayed for the nation. Included in the VC collection are the medals of Sir Neville Howse who won the award in the Boer War becoming Australia's first VC. There are eight (of 9) nine crosses awarded to Australians for the Gallipoli campaign including the medals of the legendary Albert Jacka VC MC and bar. The collection also includes the cross of the first Australian winner of the Second World War, Corporal John Edmondson who died in the exploit at Tobruk for which the award was made. The medals of Bomber Command hero Sir Hughie Edwards; the medals of the Tom Derrick VC DCM who was mourned by the nation when he ultimately fell at Tarakan in 1945; and the medals of Warrant Officer 'Dasher' Wheatley who fought a fatal 'last stand' action beside a wounded mate in Vietnam are displayed.
