Henry Kelly
Henry Kelly VC MC
Henry Kelly was born on July 10th 1887 in Collyhurst, into an Irish Catholic family. Much decorated and ever the perennial soldier, Henry was to take part in many of the wars of the 20th century and to earn distinction in all of them.
By the age of sixteen, Henry was working at the Post office as sole support to his widowed mother and her ten children.
At the outbreak of war in 1914, Henry was quick to volunteer and initially joined the Cameron Highlanders before later moving to the Manchester Regiment, where he quickly rose to the rank of Sergeant Major. He later gained a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Duke of Wellington's Regiment.
By 1915 he was on active service on the Somme where, showing outstanding bravery, he saved the lives of a number of his comrades for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Later he was also awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre and the French Medaille Militaire. In Italy he was awarded the Military Cross and a Bar to Military Cross at Piave. In 1918 he rose to the rank of Major. During his army career he'd been wounded on two occasions.

Links The Rise of Edward St John Daniel Edward St John Daniel was born at the family home 1 Windsor Terrace, Clifton, Bristol on 17 th January 1837, the first child of a well-known Bristol attorney, Edward Daniel. His mother, Barbara Bedford, was the granddaughter of Henry Beauchamp St John, the 12 th Baron St John, and there is evidence that Edward was known as "St John" (sinjon) by his family. Edward St John Daniel was also the first cousin 12 times removed of Henry Tudor, King Henry VII (1457-1509), through their common ancestor, Henry's grandmother, Margaret Beauchamp (c. 1410-1482). Daniel's mother died shortly after giving birth to his third sister, Lucy Gertrude, in February 1850, when Daniel was barely thirteen. The following year, just before his 14

56. David Lord's Victoria Cross
doing two dropping runs and remaining at the controls thereby giving his crew theirbest chance a escaping he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
http://freespace.virgin.net/f.cassidy/arnhemvc.htm
Flt. Lt. David S.A. Lord VC. DFC. On the morning of September 19th 1944, Douglas C47 'Dakota' "YS - DM" piloted by Flt. Lt. David S.A.Lord DFC along with others of 271 Squadron RAF Transport Command took off from their base at Down Ampney in Gloustershire to re-supply beleaguered Allied troops at Arnhem in Holland. The Allied Airborne troops had been surrounded and were being pressed into a small area heavily defended by anti-aircraft guns. The air crews were told of this and also of the disastrous circumstances that many were enduring and so to ensure accuracy they were ordered to fly at 900 feet when dropping their containers.
While flying at 1,500 feet near Arnhem the starboard wing of Flt Lt Lord's Dakota was hit twice by anti-aircraft fire, as a result the starboard engine was set on fire. He would have been justified to leave the main stream of aircraft and either tried to return to his base in England or even abandon the aircraft altogether, but on learning that all his crew were un-injured and that the dropping zone was just 3 minutes away he decided he would complete his mission as the troops on the ground were in such dire need of supplies.
As for Flight Lieutenant D.S.A. Lord DFC. For continuing with his damaged and burning aircraft doing two dropping runs and remaining at the controls thereby giving his crew their best chance a escaping he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He lies buried alongside his crew and the dispatchers in the cemetery at Oosterbeeck.

Stephen's Study Room: Home - UK Medals - Gallantry - Victoria Cross
Introduction
This section deals with various people who have been awarded The Victoria Cross for bravery. It is the UK's highest award for bravery by a military person in the presence of the enemy. In order of precedence, the Victoria Cross is the highest award, and is the most senior decoration. It takes precedence above all other medals and orders, including the George Cross Only one family (the Seagrim Brothers ) has won both the Victoria Cross and George Cross; a different brother winning each of the medals. Only three people have won the Victoria Cross twice (VC and Bar). Click here for the details of these special people. The most recent awards of the Victoria Cross were made during the 1982 Falkland Islands conflict For an extremely interesting series of articles about some of their former pupils, who were subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross, visit the "We Remember Them" section at Summer Field School 's web site.
