Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia

FOR THE BLOOD IS THE LIFE
    F. MARION CRAWFORD - 1854-1909

My friend, who sometimes visits me in my summer solitude, is an artist by profession, a Scandinavian by birth, and a cosmopolitan by force of circumstances. We had dined at sunset; the sunset glow had reddened and faded again, and the evening purple steeped the vast chain of the mountains that embrace the deep gulf to eastward and rear themselves higher and higher toward the south. It was hot, and we sat at the landward corner of the platform, waiting for the night breeze to come down from the lower hills. The color sank out of the air, there was a little interval of deep-grey twilight, and a lamp sent a yellow streak from the open door of the kitchen, where the men were getting their supper.
Then the moon rose suddenly above the crest of the promontory, flooding the platform and lighting up every little spur of rock and knoll of grass below us, down to the edge of the motionless water. My friend lighted his pipe and sat looking at a spot on the hillside. I knew that he was looking at it, and for a long time past I had wondered whether he would ever see anything there that would fix his attention. I knew that spot well. It was clear that he was interested at last, though it was a long time before he spoke. Like most painters, he trusts to his own eyesight, as a lion trusts his strength and a stag his speed, and he is always disturbed when he cannot reconcile what he sees with what he believes that he ought to see.

    GHOULTIDE GREETINGS
    Horror Stories for Christmas

Check out my Christmas collection at Double Dragon Publishing GHOULTIDE GREETINGS is a website dedicated to the Christmas ghost or horror story. In North America, we tend to identify horror with Halloween, but in Europe ghost stories (or winter's tales) were told at Christmas, when the supernatural seemed to be waiting just outside the door. On Christmas Eve, families would gather around the fire and tell stories to send a chill down the spine. Charles Dickens promoted this holiday fare in his magazines Household Words and All the Year Round, and by writing several classics which are still enjoyed today. For more on Dickens' contribution read: "Christmas Spirits: The Ghost Stories of Charles Dickens" by G. W. Thomas FREE Ebook! WINTER TALES in pdf

Chapter 1: I II III IV ... IV Chapter 7. The New Spirit. T HE continuity of literature is, happily, not a continuity of unvarying standards or unchanging ideals. "New occasions teach new duties; Time makes ancient good uncouth." Literature is normally in a transitional state and there are no hard and fast chronological lines that separate the old from the new. Nevertheless there occur periods more or less clearly marked, in which one may trace the advent of new interests and the waning of old traditions. Such a period in the history of our literature may be recognized in both England and America. We characterize it as the passing of the Victorian Age , Robert Herrick, and Winston Churchill outstanding figures in the years that follow.

His friend Cowley commemorated him in a beautiful ode. Crawford, Francis Marion The Indian Herald (1879-80). Thereafter he settled in Italy, living chiefly at Sorrento, and becoming a Roman Catholic. His principal historical works are Ave Roma Immortalis The Rulers of the South (reprinted as Sicily, Calabria, and Malta , 1904), and Venetian Gleanings (1905), but his reputation rests mainly on his novels, of which he wrote between 30 and 40, the best known of which are perhaps Mr. Isaacs Dr. Claudius A Roman Singer Saracinesca (1890), generally considered his masterpiece, Don Orsino Pietro Ghisleri (1893), and The Heart of Rome (1903). His one play is Francesca da Rimini . His novels are all interesting, and written in a style of decided distinction. His historical works, though full of information, lack spirit.
