A Guide to Fantasy Authors and Tales
compiled by George Jelliss
This second section of the guide is a survey of the most interesting and influential works and authors of fantasy from about 1710 to 1890. The identification of this period as the Age of Gothic Horror is made evident by the predominance of mauve and blue among the background colours, and the inclusion of many of the horror classics such as Frankenstein and Dracula. It may be said that the reactions of modern readers to some gothic horror fiction are often not what their authors would have expected. Many of us have become desensitised to excesses, both in fiction and reality, and made aware of humorous incongruities by modern spoofs such as the Munsters and the Addams family. However, it would be wrong to identify everything in this period as Gothic. Another important strand is an outward-looking approach that can be put down to the real-life exploits of the great explorers, travellers, naturalists and anthropologists of the time, which led in particular to the enormous popularity of stories of Lost Races and Continents. Daniel Defoe
The True-Born Englishman 1701, satirical poem;

Crawford, F. Marion
2 August 1854 - 9 April 1909
Born and raised largely in Italy, where he spent most of his adult life, Crawford was the son of the American sculptor Thomas Crawford (quite popular in the mid C19). With a cosmopolitan education (in Italy, America, England, and Germany) and extensively traveled (including a stint in India as a newspaper editor), Crawford was the living embodiment, for many, of the late C19 genteel tradition. Extremely popular as a novelist at the turn of the 20th century, Crawford is now little read; it is somewhat ironic that he may now be best known for a few ghost stories, pieces which Crawford wrote largely to help keep his name before the public and/or to make some quick and easy cash. These tales are a miniscule and fairly unrepresentative part of his total literary output, although several of them are excellent ghost stories.
Sites: brief biographical note [Catholic Encyclopedia] Crawford was indeed a Catholic, although this fact really doesn't figure into much of his fiction in any noticeable way, although some of his non-fiction is on Catholic subjects. Brief biographical note This brief note is the full text of a publisher's blurb included at the end of Crawford's Man Overboard!

Biographical Sketch
Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde, born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, was the second son of Sir William Robert and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde. At the age of ten, Wilde entered the well-known Portora Royal School, where he excelled in Greek studies. His interest in Greek continued at Trinity College, Dublin, where John Mahaffy, an eminent Greek scholar who later took Wilde on a tour of Italy, was his tutor. Wilde was awarded a scholarship in classics from Magdalene College, Oxford, which he entered in 1874. During his fourth year at Oxford, Wilde won the prestigious Newdigate Prize for imitative poetry with a verse praising Ravenna, a city he had visited with Mahaffy and the burial site of Dante. In addition to his studies, Wilde began to develop his role as poseur and aesthete. Wilde received his BA in 1878 and, after an additional year at Oxford, went to London where he began writing. In 1880 Wilde published Vera; or, The Nihilists, and in 1881 he was hired by Richard D'Oyly Carte to boost Gilbert and Sullivan's new opera Patience in America by means of a lecture tour. Dressed in black velvet and a full length fur coat, he spoke on the new aestheticism from New York to San Francisco. He met with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, and Jefferson Davies, among others.
