A god in wrath
Many workmen A learned man came to me once Supposing that I should have the courage ... You tell me this is God?
I stood upon a high place,
And saw, below, many devils
Running, leaping,
And carousing in sin.
One looked up, grinning,
And said: "Comrade! Brother!" You tell me this is God?
I tell you this is a printed list,
A burning candle and an ass. A god in wrath Was beating a man; He cuffed him loudly With thunderous blows That rang and rolled over the earth. All people came running. The man screamed and struggled, And bit madly at the feet of the god. The people cried: "Ah, what a wicked man!" "Ah, what a redoubtable god!" I saw a man pursuing the horizon; Round and round they sped. I was disturbed at this; I accosted the man. "It is futile," I said. "You lie," he cried, And ran on. The wayfarer, Perceiving the pathway to truth, Was struck with astonishment. It was thickly grown with weeds.

Crane, Stephen Crane, Stephen, , American novelist, poet, and short-story writer, b. Newark, N.J. Often designated the first modern American writer, Crane is ranked among the authors who introduced realism into American literature. The 14th child of a Methodist minister, he grew up in Port Jervis, N.Y., and briefly attended Lafayette College and Syracuse Univ. He moved to New York City in 1890 and for five years lived in poverty as a free-lance writer. His first novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (1893), a grimly realistic story of slum life, was unpopular but gained the young writer the friendship of Hamlin Garland and William Dean Howells . Crane's next novel, The Red Badge of Courage (1895, restored ed. 1982), brought him wide and deserved fame. Set during the Civil War, the novel traces the development of a young recruit, Henry Fleming, through fear, illusion, panic, and cowardice, to a quiet, humble heroism. This remarkable account of the emotions of a soldier under fire is all the more amazing since Crane had never been in battle. On the strength of the novel he served as a foreign correspondent in Cuba and in Greece. Around 1897 Crane married Cora Taylor, who ran a brothel in Florida. His marriage, coupled with his unorthodox personality, aroused scandalous rumors, including those that he was a drug addict and a satanist. Because of this slander Crane spent his last years abroad; he died of tuberculosis in Germany at the age of 28.

Maggie, A Girl of the Streets. (A Story of New York) . By Johnston Smith. [New York, 1893]. Maggie , Stephen Crane's first novel, was printed privately at his own expense under the pseudonym Johnston Smith. Maggie is recognized as the first American example of a technique that would come to be known as stark realism. A non-sentimental tale of slum life in New York City by publishers of religious and medical materials. A second, hard-cover edition, published by D. Appleton and Company of New York in 1896, was the first edition to acknowledge Crane's authorship on the title page. The copy exhibited is in its original printed yellow wrappers, unopened The original publication price announced on the title page was fifty cents.

Stephen Crane
Stephen Crane's life was restless and uneven and intensely American. Born in Newark, New Jersey, the fourteenth child of a Methodist pastor, he was the typical American boy, playing baseball, boxing, and hunting. In college he became the youngest captain and the best shortstop the Syracuse University baseball ever had. His mother, who supported the family after her husband's death, died when Stephen was eighteen, and for the next five years he lived in New York and nearly starved. The Bowery slums and a medical students' boardinghouse were his alternating surroundings while freelancing his way to a literary career. His first novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets , was about the people he saw there. Publishers would have none of it: it was "too honest." So Crane borrowed money to have it printed himself, sold it on newsstands at fifty cents a copy, and at the end of a year had disposed of fewer than a hundred copies. Not until The Red Badge of Courage was published in 1895 did Stephen Crane reach success. Though he was born six years after the Civil War ended, Crane was widely praised by veterans for his uncanny power to imagine and reproduce the sense of actual combat. The editors who had formerly turned him down now hounded him for stories. Overnight the boy who often hadn't a roof over his head knew comparative security, but he spent what he earned as fast as he got it. In the best of his work, Crane shows a rare ability to shape colorful settings, dramatic action, and perceptive characterization into ironic explorations of human nature and destiny. Joseph Conrad said of "The Open Boat" that "by the deep and simple humanity of its presentation [the story] seems somehow to illustrate the essentials of life itself, like a symbolic tale." Crane's literary generation was a tragic one, also losing Frank Norris and Harold Frederick prematurely from its ranks.

A row of thick pillars
Consciously bracing for the weight
Of a vanished roof
The bronze light of sunset strikes through them,
And over a floor made for slow rites.
There is no sound of singing
But, aloft, a great and terrible bird Is watching a cur, beaten and cut, That crawls to the cool shadows of the pillars To die. In the desert I saw a creature, naked, bestial, Who, squatting upon the ground, Held his heart in his hands, And ate of it. Because it is bitter, And because it is my heart. Should the wide world roll away, Leaving black terror, Limitless night, Nor God, nor man, nor place to stand Would be to me essential, If thou and thy white arms were there

From the start, and throughout, "He could never be told, tamed, trained or trammeled," said a classmate at one of the two universities where Crane never went to class; 'born to run,' said the other Asbury Park poet a century later. . . . Crane's New Red Badge of Courage On this day in 1982 Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage was published by Norton and Company in "the only complete edition from the original manuscript." Previous editions had incorporated cuts and changes that had been made in 1895 changes which distorted or muddied Crane's theme, and which were perhaps forced upon him by his first editor.

American author, whose second book, THE RED BANDGE OF COURAGE (1895), brought him international fame. Crane's first novel, MAGGIE: A GIRL OF THE STREETS, was a milestone in the development of literary naturalism. At its appearance in 1893 Crane was 22 years old. His manuscript was turned down by the publishers, who considered its realism too 'ugly'. Crane had to print the book at his own expense, borrowing the money from his brother. The descent of a slum girl into prostitution was first published under a pseudonym. Maggie was generally ignored by readers but it won the admiration of other rea... ~ Stephen Crane Born on this day in Newark, New Jersey, American poet and short-story writer Stephen Crane (1871–1900) was the 14th child of a Methodist minister and published his first story at age 14. Through his writing he introduced a bold realism into American literature. "You cannot choose your battlefield, God does that for you; But you can plant a standard where a standard never flew," he wrote. Upon his death of tuberculosis at age 28, Crane had produced over 100 stories and two volumes of poetry "Every sin is the result of a collaboration," he observed. The brilliant writer is best known for The Red Badge of Courage (1895), an American Civil War novel about the battle experiences of Henry Fleming, a Union soldier under fire who confronts death and heroism "He had been to touch the great death," Crane said in Chapter 24, "and found that, after all, it was but the great death .
