William Richards
Master Builder
The suburbs of Burwood, Enfield and Strathfield in Sydney, NSW, have many beautiful examples of Victorian and Federation domestic architecture. Tucked away between two busy roads - Liverpool Road and Burwood Road - is a small oasis of calm and turn-of-the-century charm, Hoskins Estate, Appian Way . In 1900 businessman George Hoskins conceived the idea of creating a model housing estate for the professional, or middle class population of Burwood, and the result is 26 of Sydney's finest federation arts and crafts style houses. While the overall concept of the estate was George Hoskins', the design and construction of the houses was the responsibility of William Richards.
I saw this estate for the first time a few years ago and was stopped in my tracks by the charm of the houses and the streetscape itself. The houses are on large blocks, their gardens are beautiful, original trees still line the footpaths, and the houses are the prettiest federation houses I've ever seen.
Their designer and builder, William Richards, was my great grandfather. He came to Australia from Wales as a young man, with his wife Jane, and we, his descendants, are proud of his contribution to our heritage.

About Kelmscott Manor
Kelmscott Manor, a grade 1 Listed Tudor farmhouse adjacent to the River Thames, was built in 1570, with an additional wing added to the northeast corner in about 1665. The Manor is built of local limestone on the edge of the village of Kelmscott. William Morris chose it as his summer home, signing a joint lease with the Pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the summer of 1871. Morris loved the house as a work of true craftsmanship, totally unspoilt and unaltered, and in harmony with the village and the surrounding countryside. He considered it so natural in its setting as to be almost organic, it looked to him as if it had "grown up out of the soil"; and with "quaint garrets amongst great timbers of the roof where of old times the tillers and herdsmen slept".

107. Memory Hill
A recounting by Hazel Craft of how a monument to Elder Daniel Williams was built on Memory Hill.
http://kentuckyexplorer.com/nonmembers/8-memhill.html
Morgan County's "Memory Hill" A Dream Realized By Hazel Craft - 2000 On April 29th, around 100 interested, enthusiastic friends and loved ones gathered at Memory Hill at Caney, Kentucky (near West Liberty), to help dedicate a "dream come true" for Mr. and Mrs. Wardie Craft of Caney; a dream that was conceived in 1958 in Washington, D. C., while the late Mr. Craft and his wife, Hazel, who continues to reside at Memory Hill, were on their honeymoon. Wardie made the remark, "Wouldn't it be great if we could someday, somehow, leave a museum depicting the history of Eastern Kentucky!" From that day forward, for almost 60 years, they worked toward that goal; collecting early American furniture, old cooking utensils, crocks, churns, tools, dishes, and much more. Many, many friends and loved ones made this collection possible. The Crafts often remarked that the completion of the foundation was a "miracle." They often told the children, "God does work in mysterious ways." So many people were connected in this dream that it's impossible to name them all. So many miracles took place. Wardie often remarked that it was a miracle that he was hired to teach at the Clear Fork School in Breathitt County, where he met a young 16-year-old girl, Hazel Bach; who had no other thought, but to finish school and become a teacher. Hazel often remarked that meeting Wardie "turned her world upside down."

109. William Morris (1834-1896)
Notes on William Morris, especially relating to his activities as an artist and illustrator and his relations with the arts and crafts and with the PreRaphaelites. From Bob Speel.

William Morris (1834-1896)
Page from The Glittering Plain Famous as the founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement . He was born in Walthamstow, then a village, and moved to a grand residence there called Water House at the age of 14 - this has since become the William Morris Gallery . He studied at Oxford with the intention of becoming a clergyman, but while there he met Edward Coley Burne-Jones , also studying for the church, and they both began to turn towards art. They were persuaded by Rossetti to give up the studies and become artists. Morris did a year in architectural practice of G. E. Street , and then turned to painting. However, he soon found that his metier was design. The cooperative attempt to decorate his new house (the Red House, built by Philip Webb ) at Bexleyheath, south east of London, lead to the setting up of the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. The partners were Morris, Burne-Jones, Rossetti Ford Madox Brown Philip Webb , Charles Faulkner, and Peter Paul Marshall, a surveyor. The firm was set up as a 'company of Fine Art Workmen', designing and producing (or at least supervising the production of) furniture, wallpaper, murals, tapestrywork, stained glass windows, metalwork, tapestries, and smaller works such as tiles and embroidery. It started in 8 Lion Square, London, where there was sufficient space for workshops, showrooms, and a kiln in the basement for tile production. The firm later became simply Morris and Co. when Morris - always blessed with a private income - bought out the other partners.

William Morris , the son of a successful businessman, was born in Walthamstow, a quiet village east of London , on 24th March, 1834. After successfully investing in a copper mine, William's father was able to purchase Woodford Hall, a large estate on the edge of Epping Forest, in 1840.
Morris was educated at Marborough and Exeter College, Oxford . At university Morris met Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The three men were all artists and formed a group called the Brotherhood. During this period their work was inspired by the history, ritual and architecture of the Medieval period. Morris and Burne-Jones were committed Anglicans and for a time they talked of taking part in a "crusade and holy warfare" against the art and culture of their own time.

111. The Roots Of Arts And Crafts
Article from the University of Toledo about the birth of the arts and crafts movement, whose primary proponents were William Morris and Jogn Ruskin.

The Noble Craftsmen We Promote:
The Arts and Crafts Movement in the American Midwest
Roots of Arts and Crafts
Back to Introduction On to America The Arts and Crafts Movement began in England in the 1860s as a reform movement. Its primary proponents were John Ruskin (1819-1900) and William Morris who is pictured at right (1834-1896). Ruskin, its philosophical leader, was the most influential of all Victorian writers on the arts and a member of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The Pre-Raphaelites believed the medieval world was purer in form than the post-Renaissance world because it was more closely tied to nature. Ruskin's book The Stones of Venice (1853) had a great impact on the intellectuals of Victorian England. In it, he made a direct connection between art, nature, and morality-good moral art was nature expressed through man. Continuing this connection, Ruskin believed the decorative arts affected the men who produced them. The machine dehumanized the worker and led to a loss of dignity because it removed him from the artistic process and thus, nature itself. As Ruskin stated, "all cast from the machine is bad, as work it is dishonest." While Ruskin built the philosophical foundation of the Arts and Crafts Movement, it was William Morris who became its leader. Morris took Ruskin's ideas about nature, art, morality, and the degradation of human labor and translated them into a unified theory of design. By doing so, Morris successfully wedded aesthetics and social reform into the Arts and Crafts Movement.
