41. The Daring Escape Of Ellen Craft: African-American History Book
Ellen Craft escaped slavery by disguising herself as a white man. The DaringEscape of Ellen Craft tells her story for young readers (grades 13).
http://www.cathy-moore.com/ecbook.html
The Daring Escape of Ellen Craft is very closely based on the autobiography of Ellen and William Craft. It includes an afterword that describes what Ellen and William did when they were free; it also has a timeline of Ellen's life. 48 pages with color illustrations, for grades 2 through 5. Awards Carter G. Woodson Honor award for the most distinguished social science books for young readers that depict ethnicity NCSS/CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People Storytelling World Awards Honor Title 2003 Best Children's Book, Children's Book Committee of Bank Street College Reviews New readers will appreciate the fast-paced adventure, simple language, large typeface with plenty of space for detailed illustrations, and a relatively obscure story set in a familiar historical time. Though this series is written for new readers, Moore manages to include some difficult and important angles to the adventure. She allows the young reader to see clearly the differences between the way William has to live as he travels as a slave and how Ellen, posing as a white man, lives....Young readers will be inspired by this tale of personal courage in the face of prejudice. Kirkus Reviews, February 2002

42. Ellen Craft: Online Activities And Lesson Plans For African-American History
links on AfricanAmerican history. Based on the story of Ellen Craft, who escaped slavery by disguising herself as a white man.
http://www.cathy-moore.com/ellencraft.html
The story In 1848, Ellen Craft escaped slavery by disguising herself as a white man. For four days, she convinced ticket agents, guards, and fellow passengers that she was a white gentleman travelling north for medical treatment. Her husband went with her as her slave. Ellen's daring act brought her and her husband to Philadelphia and to a future in the abolitionist movement. The book The Daring Escape of Ellen Craft tells the story in easy language for new readers. It was written by Cathy Moore, illustrated by Mary O'Keefe Young, and published in 2002 by Carolrhoda, a division of Lerner. 48. Ellen Kushner And Delia Sherman - An Appreciation By Terri Windling
Like Ellen, she made a name for herself quite rapidly, demonstratinga maturity and mastery of Craft in her very first published works.
    http://www.endicott-studio.com/intedtw.html
I first met Ellen many years ago, as I was entering the New York publishing field just as she was leaving it bravely quitting an editorial job at Simon & Schuster in order to write. She locked herself away in a rambling old apartment on the Upper West Side (with a crumbling Renaissance atmosphere that would not be out of place in "Riverside"), and emerged with Swordspoint a novel which is now a modern classic of the speculative fiction field. Our friendship grew over several years as we discovered we shared a taste not only for old folk tales, folk music and myths, but for black leather jackets, David Bowie and Prince, and the glam street culture of Eighties-era New York. When I left a long-term relationship and found myself with nowhere to live, Ellen invited me into that Riverside-like apartment of hers for a period of time that proved to be enormously creative for us both. Many of the projects we've worked on since began with our kitchen table conversations lounging about in vintage-store lingerie; drinking endless cups of coffee, or scotch; spinning dreams, ideas, and fantasies to be captured upon the page. The seeds for Ellen's award-winning novel Thomas the Rhymer were planted there; and my "adult fairy tale" anthology series; and Borderland; and other stories and projects that would emerge in the years to come.

The Navy acquired the craft in July 1917 and placed her in service early in August as USS Ellen (SP 1209). In 1918 the Navy eliminated her name, and for the remainder of her Navy career she was known as SP-1209. In April 1919, following the end of the First World War, she was returned to her owner. more.

Twice a week, an English class met for three hours. Students got
hungry, so they brought snacks. Those snacks usually came with
salsa, made with varying ingredients and regional touches, and
    always with a story.
With so many wonderful salsas coming to class, Brennan hit on the
idea of putting the recipes into writing as a way to teach English as well as preserve some regional Mexican recipes. I just ordered the book! Craft Area for Children
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-540

Keep craft supplies organized in a plastic bin.
Dr. Bra Vada Garrett-Akinsanya stops by TIPical Mary Ellen to share ideas with host Mary Ellen Pinkham for setting up a safe and neat arts-and-crafts work area for children.
    • Before diving into a craft activity with children, make sure to dress them accordingly. Gloves, smocks, safety glasses, long pants and long sleeves may be appropriate, depending on the particular project.
    • Make sure the work area is well protected. Use a painter's drop cloth or newspaper to cover the craft area. Use brown butcher paper or newspaper to cover a surface such as a kitchen table.
    • Have children wear rubber gloves if they're doing something really messy.
