Ellen and William Craft were escaped slaves. Ellen, being light skined, was able to pass as white. In 1848, they were able to escape Georgia. Ellen was dressed as a white man with her husband as her slave. Ellen pretended to have a injured head to make up for the fact that she was illiterate. The two reached Philadepha, where they stayed for a few weeks. Ellen was employed as a stemstress. William was a cabinet maker. They made new friends that included white ablishionists and blacks. Within a month they began speaking at anti-slavery meetings. A newspaper reprinted in Georgia, about one of the meetings, informed their former owner of their present location. September of 1850, Congress passed the Fugiative Slave Law. Which ment the Crafts and others were in danger of becoming slaves again. They wern't about ready to give up. On October 4, the abolitionist in Boston responded by holding a meeting at the African Meeting House. To resist the new law they voted to organize a group. The group was called to League of Freedom. They elected Lewis Hayden the president and Willian Craft vice president. One month after the Fugitive Slave Law passed, the owners of the Crafts sent agents to Boston to get them. The Crafts were the first escape slaves to be looked for by their owner.

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. William and Ellen Craft's daring escape from slavery in 1848 made them famous throughout antebellum America, heroes in the eyes of abolitionists and criminals in the eyes of slavery supporters. The unusual circumstances of their flight to freedom were a major factor in their celebrity. Ellen, so light-skinned as to be nearly white, disguised herself in men's clothing and posed as a young white planter to effect her escape. Her husband, William, played the role of her slave. Together, they traveled from Georgia to Philadelphia by train and by boat, often staying in first-class accommodations and always directly under the noses of southern authorities. Americans everywhere were moved by their amazing story of boundary crossing, for the Crafts passed through not only the literal boundary that separated North from South, but also the social boundaries of race, class, and gender that divided the population of the United States.

Thomas Craft (1802-1869) m. Summerville Hudson (ca. 1801-after 1880)
Vachel Craft (1804-1866) m. Mary Payne (1810-1872) Thomas Craft married Summerville Hudson in 1823, Surry Co., NC (she was born in VA about 1803). Vachel Craft (1804-1866) married Mary Payne in Davidson County NC in 1828. Both are buried at Sharon Methodist Church, Forsyth County, as is Mary Payne Craft. In 1880 Summerville Craft, widow of Thomas, is living next to Vachel's son Stephen W. Craft. Vachel's sons Albert and Junius Craft were witnesses to Thomas Craft's will. These associations suggest a close family connection.

AFTER my wife had a little recovered herself,
she threw off the disguise and assumed her own
apparel. We then stepped into the sitting room, and
asked to see the landlord. The man came in, but
he seemed thunderstruck on finding a fugitive
slave and his wife, instead of a "young cotton planter
and his nigger." As his eyes travelled round the
room, he said to me, "Where is your master?" I
pointed him out. The man gravely replied, "I am
not joking, I really wish to see your master." I pointed him out again, but at first he could not believe his eyes; he said "he knew that was not the gentleman that came with me." Collins, and residing in the same town. Like many of the slaves at the South, Ellen was as white as most persons of the clear Anglo-Saxon origin. Her features were prominent, hair straight, eyes of a light hazel color, and no one on first seeing the white slave would suppose that a drop of African blood coursed through her veins. With the permission of their owners, William and Ellen were united in marriage, after the fashion of the slaves. But both of these persons had long been lamenting their sad condition, and were only waiting for an opportunity of escaping from the house of bondage. It is usual, among what are called good slaveholders, to give their servants the Christmas week as a time of rest and pleasure. Such was the custom of the owners of William and Ellen. As the Christmas of 1848 approached, the Crafts, instead of studying how they should best spend their time in pleasure, began maturing a plan of escape. "I don't think this is a good half dollar," said William, as he finished counting his money late one night. "Still," continued he, "I shall have no trouble in passing it." "If some persons had your money, they would have a jolly time this Christmas," remarked Ellen. "I wish we could get our freedom with it," replied the husband. "Now, William," said the wife, "listen to me, and take my advice, and we shall be free in less than a month." "Let me hear your plans, then,"said William. "Take part of your money and purchase me a good suit of gentlemen's apparel, and when the white people give us our holiday, let us go off to the North, instead of spending our time in

The authors had escaped their slavery in Georgia in 1848, become a cause celebre in Boston in 1850 when Bostonians led by Thodore Parker repulsed kidnappers out to take them back. By 1860, they were living in England.
