My influences included John Newton Samuel Johnson Thomas Gray The first child of Reverend John Cowper and Ann Donne Cowper, Willam Cowper was born on November 15, 1731, in Berkhampstead, Herefordshire, England. The poet's mother died when he was six and Cowper was sent to Dr. Pittman's boarding school, where he was routinely bullied. In 1748, he enrolled in the Middle Temple in order to pursue a law degree. Shortly thereafter, he fell in love with Theodora Cowper, a cousin. Her father did not approve, and their relationship ended in 1755. Cowper wrote a sequence of poems, Delia, chronicling this affair but the book was not published until 1825.
    In 1763, through family connections, he accepted a clerkship of the journals in the House of Lords. A rival faction, however, challenged his appointment and the ordeal caused Cowper to enter Nathaniel Cotton's Collegium Insanorum at St. Albans. While there he converted to Evangelicalism. In 1765, he moved to Huntingdon and took a room with the Rev. Morley Unwin and his wife Mary. Unwin died of a riding accident in 1767 and Cowper and Mary Unwin moved together to the town of Olney in 1768. They were not separated until her death in 1796. While at Olney, Cowper became close friends with the Evangelical clergyman John Newton; together they co-authored the Olney Hymns, which was first published in 1779 and included Newton's famous hymn "Amazing Grace." Of the 68 hymns Cowper wrote, "Oh for a closer walk with God" and "God moves in a mysterious way" are the most well known.

Biography
When Cowper showed signs of returning depression Newton suggested they work together on providing hymns for the weekly meetings. This gesture of friendship resulted in many hymns grounded in prayer and scripture which still give much encouragement and incentive to worship today, two hundred years later, all over the world.
These critics who to faith no quarter grant,
But call it mere hypocrisy and cant
To make a just acknowledgment of praise
And thanks to God for governing our ways,
Approve Confucius more and Zoroaster When Cowper and Mary Unwin moved from Weston, Underwood in their final years to stay with his cousin Johnson, he wrote these lines in pencil on the window shutter of a bedroom overlooking the garden of the Lodge, The shutter was closed up for twenty years to save paying the window tax. It is now kept at the Cowper and Newton Museum, Olney. “Oh! with what a surprise of joy,” wrote Newton a few days after Cowper’s death, “would he find himself immediately before the throne, and in the presence of his Lord! All his sorrows left below, and earth exchanged for heaven."

VERSES SUPPOSED TO BE WRITTEN BY ALEXANDER SELKIRK This is the full text of the poem of which the first stanza is shown in the Glossary to illustrate the term, scan. It also provides an example of anapestic feet and the second stanza begins with an apostrophe.
I am monarch of all I survey,
My right there is none to dispute;
From the center all round to the sea
I am lord of the fowl and the brute. O solitude! where are the charms
That sages have seen in thy face?
While anapestic trimeter is the prevailing metrical pattern of this poem, only 20 of the 56 lines are fully anapestic; 36 lines begin with an iambic foot. Better dwell in the midst of alarms
Than reign in this horrible place. I am out of humanity's reach.
I must finish my journey alone,
Never hear the sweet music of speech;
I start at the sound of my own. The beasts that roam over the plain My form with indifference see; They are so unacquainted with man, Their tameness is shocking to me. Born in Scotland in 1676, Alexander Selkirk ran away to sea when he was nineteen. In 1704, during a privateering expedition to plunder Spanish shipping off the Pacific coast of South America, he became concerned over the seaworthiness of their ship. After a quarrel with the captain, he asked to be put ashore on the Juan Fernandez islands, about 400 miles off the coast of Chile. Selkirk remained alone on the island for four years and four months, until finally rescued by an English vessel in 1709.

Thus, conscience freed from every clog, Mahometans eat up the hog. You laugh-'tis well-the tale applied May make you laugh on t'other side. Renounce the world-the preacher cries. His hymns, while expressing the hope of the new humanitarian religious revival, often gave way to religious despair and self-distrust. After Newton left Olney, Cowper, having recovered from another period of insanity, turned to writing about simple homely subjects, producing his famous long poem, The Task (1785). Its descriptions of the sights and sounds of country life foreshadowed 19th-century romanticism. Cowper's sweet-tempered, playful moods found a way into many of his poems, the most notable being "The Diverting History of John Gilpin." He also made a relatively unsuccessful translation of Homer (1791). After the death of Mrs. Unwin in 1796, his old malady returned, and he wrote little except the anguished poem, "The Castaway." His letters are considered among the most brilliant in English literature.
