(1.75 linear feet) Ms Coll 41 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract One of the founding figures of American parasitology, Henry Baldwin Ward was a professor of zoology at the Universities of Nebraska (1893-1909) and Illinois (1909-1933). The first American to offer a laboratory course in parasitology and the first to offer graduate instruction in the field, Ward's research interests touched on the medical aspects of parasitology, fish parasitology and ichthyology, fresh water biology, and ecology. The Ward Papers include just under 2 linear feet of professional correspondence dating primarily between the period of Ward's graduate education in Germany in the late 1880s until the time of his retirement in 1933, dealing primarily with parasitological and ichthyological research, the exchange of specimens and publications, and the Journal of Parasitology . Some files include retained copies of letters written by Ward to accompany the letters received.

Background note A zoologist and educator, Henry Baldwin Ward (1865-1945) is remembered as the "father of American parasitology." Born in Troy, New York, Ward was raised in a scientifically-inclined family that included his father, Richard Halsted Ward, a microscopist and physician, and aunt, Anna Lydia Ward, an explorer and lecturer. After receiving his A.B. from Williams College in 1885, and three years of teaching science in the local high school, Ward pursued postgraduate study in Germany, spending time at the Universities of Gottingen, Freiburg, and Leipzig, working as well at three of the most advanced marine biological stations in Europe at Naples, Ville-Franche-sur-Mer, and Helgoland. At Leipzig, Ward came particularly under the influence of Rudolph Leuckart, who is often credited as being the founder of the science of parasitology, and a noted expert on

Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia

Chronology of Science in the United States 1870-1879 DATE EVENT SUBJECTS In viewing a solar eclipse at Jerez, Spain, on December 22, 1870, Charles Augustus Young (1834-1908) observed that the sun's dark spectral lines briefly reverse at totality. In this he is credited with discovery of the "reversing layer." Astronomy / Physics William Healey Dall (1845-1927) published Alaska and Its Resources (Boston). General or Miscellaneous / Geography and Cartography Standard Oil Company was established by John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937). In 1972, Standard Oil (New Jersey) took the name Exxon Corporation. General or Miscellaneous / Organizations—Industry John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was put in charge of a Congressionally enacted survey that in 1876 became known as the Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region. Powell continued at the head until it was ended in 1879. For a time associated with the Smithsonian Institution, in 1874 the Survey was transferred to the Department of Interior. Government—Federal / Geology Congress effectively assigned to the Army's Signal Service the task of providing meteorological information and weather forecasting, the beginnings of a national weather service, with part of its mission being aid to agriculture and business. At the time, the Signal Service was under the charge of Colonel Albert J. Myer (1829-1880). In 1871, Cleveland Abbe (1838-1916) became associated with the enterprise as a civilian meteorologist.

Links Introduction to the Cactaceae For thousands of years, people utilized cacti and other fleshy, "succulent" plants as valuable sources of food and medicine, as elements of religious ceremony and for landscaping. Unique in tolerance, structure, and habit, these plants grow wild from Patagonia, Argentina, to the Acropolis in Athens. Today, endemic, exotic, and cultivated species of succulent plants are still used by corporations, farmers, consumers, and tribepeople worldwide. Some of these plants are true cacti , while others are often mistakenly referred to as cacti. The family Cactaceae (the cacti) can be distinguished from other succulent plants by distinct morphological taxonomic biological and phytochemical characteristics.
