John and Ann Cotton and Bacon's Rebellion Conjecture on their connections and possible genealogy Robert Bruce Cotton was once thought to be the ancestor of John Cotton of Queens Creek, York County, Virginia. However, some now speculate that his father might be John or Henry Cotton, London merchants a nd half-brothers of Sir Robert Bruce Cotton who purchased Broughton Hall in the county of Northampton , England. It is interesting that the letter written to C.H., now believed to be Christopher Harris at Yardly, in Northhamptonshire. Another of our family mysteries is the maiden name of Anne Cotton. Was it Harrison as many think? Or was she the Anne Dunbar listed by Drummond as one of his headrights: Michael Cotton posted this message:
I don't have information that would prove that Ann Dunbar and Ann Cotton were one in the same, but I do see it as a possibility. The names John Cotton
and Ann Dunbar first appear together in Drummond's 1661 headright application. Then in Nov. 1666, John Paine applied for a headright for 18 people and listed John Cotton and Ann Dunbar side by side. In 1667, John Weire and Robert Paine applied for headrights for 24 people. Many of the names are the same as in the two previously mentioned applications, but John Cotton's and Ann Dunbar's names are transposed as John Dunbar and Ann Cotton. None of the other names were switched around like this. That mistake might suggest that these two people were thought of as a pair.

    William Dunbar Journals
(0.1 linear feet) American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract A merchant and cotton planter and one of the great scientific observers of the Old Southwest, William Dunbar led the 1804-1805 expedition to explore the southwestern boundaries of the Louisiana Purchase. With his second in command George Hunter, the Dunbar expedition provided some of the earliest records of the flora and fauna of the Ouachita Mountains as well as the first detailed chemical analyses of the Hot Springs of Arkansas. Both manuscripts by William Dunbar document the expedition up the Red and Ouachita Rivers to the Hot Springs of Arkansas in 1804-1805. The "Journal... to the Mouth of the Red River" (200p.) is the fullest available record of the activities of the expedition from the time of their departure from St. Catharine's Landing on October 16, 1804, until their return to Natchez, Miss., on January 26, 1805. The "Journal of a geometrical survey" includes a record of course and distances as well as a thermometrical log and other brief notes. The two are bound together in a volume with Zebulon Montgomery Pike's journal of a voyage to the source of the Mississippi, 1805-1806.

    'Cotton' to Cotten
This article describes William Stephenson's research regarding Sallie Southall Cotten. This and other articles may be found in the University Archives. Citation for this article is: Rees, Franceine. "'Cotton' to Cotten," ECU Magazine Winter, 1988, Volume 2, No. 1
The life of one of North Carolina's most distinguished women is documented in a new book by an ECU English professor. The biography, Sallie Southall Cotten: A Woman's Life in North Carolina by William Stephenson, is the result of 10 years of research and "piecing together" scattered bits of Cotten's writings. Within days of it's official publication, the biography was named winner of the first annual Marguerite Schumann Award for Literary Achievement, an honor given by the North Carolina Chapter of the Victorian Society in America. Dr. Stephenson's book, the only full-length biography of Cotten, was based on interviews with her surviving relatives and associates, contemporary newspapers and several collections of unpublished papers in East Carolina Manuscript Collection, the Southern Historical Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill and the Virginia State Library. A particulary rich source of material was her correspondence. "Her letters were of immerse help because she told her story to so many people in so many ways," Stephenson says. "She was a wonderful correstpondent, and people tended to save her letters."

    98. Roger Williams
This essay contrasts the views of Roger Williams and John Cotton in respect to the proper roles of church and state.

The Root of American Religious LibertyRoger Williams
Drawing the proper boundaries between the realm of the state and that of the often powerful religious interests within it has historically been a critical challenge for civil rulers.
It is fair to say that bloodshed and strife have been common companions of the tensions often associated with the overlapped sovereignties of church and state. The simplest method of resolving these conflicting spheres of power, and that used most commonly by the foremost empires of the past, is to consolidate all civil and ecclesiastical power in the hands of a single emporer. This was the method of ancient Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Israel , Rome, and many aboriginal societies. With the founding of America and the "new world" a laboratory was created whose alchemists were willing to experiment with a formula that was not in the research notebooks of the church-state past. This boldness of experimentation was gradual in America, as disparate colonies with several established churches were transformed over the course of a century to a single nation with a Constitution forbidding establishment. Separating the powers of church and state has been America's unique addition to history's search for the optimal arrangement of governmental power. It is probable that America would have never moved so forcefully to its radical stance of separating church and state had it not been for the life and work of Roger Williams and James Madison.

    • 4 Meter All Sky Survey (4MASS)
Work on 4MASS is in collaboration with Jim Condon, Rick Perley and Namir Kassim's group at NRL. The 4 Meter All Sky Survey is a proposed survey to be made with the VLA at a wavelength of 4 meters (74 MHz). This will be made in the B and AnB configurations with 80" resolution and approximately 100 mJy RMS noise. My work on this has been in the area of calibration and imaging. The behavior of the ionosphere at this low frequency makes calibration challenging. An AIPS add-on package suitable for calibration and imaging low frequency VLA data is available here. Preliminary results are available for the portions of the sky already covered:
    • VLA observations of the SIRTF FLS field.
This is a project with Jim Condon, Q. F. Yin and the SIRTF team. The SIRTF First Look Survey lies inside the SIRTF "constant viewing zone" near the north ecliptic pole. It covers about 5 square degrees in a region having a relatively faint cirrus foreground, centered on J2000 RA = 17 18 00., declination = +59 30 00. The VLA image of this field has a resolution of 5 arcseconds FWHM and an RMS noise of 23 microJy/beam at 1.4 GHz. The VLA survey results are available:
    • LOFAR Technical Advisory Panel
I am currently a member of the Technical Advisory Panel for the LOFAR project. LOFAR is a proposed low frequency array being designed by a consortium of Dutch and North American University groups and the Naval Research Lab. LOFAR is being designed to have high sensitivity and resolution.
