PIERRE CORNEILLE
Born, Rouen, France, 1606
Died, probably in Paris, 1684
This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama CORNEILLE'S first play, , was presented in Paris in 1629 and at once scored a popular success. Like the playwright's other early efforts it was full of the insipid love that was the mode of the moment. These first plays of Corneille's, however, insipid as they were, were far superior to any French plays that preceded them. It is to these very plays, in fact, that modern drama owes the happy invention of the soubrette. But when the epoch-making Cid appeared in 1636 it so far outshone anything that preceded it, that the earlier plays were practically disregarded. The critics and Corneille's contemporary writers waged around this revolutionary piece of dramatic writing as passionate a battle as raged around Hugo 's Hernani some two centuries later. The public, however, spoke with no uncertain voice, and from The Cid modern French drama dates. It is quite possible that much of the criticism of

Email Us PIERRE CORNEILLE (1606-1684) P IERRE Corneille's first works were comedies, and none too good; but when, at the age of thirty-one, he produced the Cid , there was erected an important landmark in the history of drama. The Cid , it will be remembered, was a Spanish hero of the twelfth century. His deeds were celebrated in many ballads and poems, and had been made the subject of a play by the Spanish . Corneille, conscious of the classic bent of French taste, adhered pretty closely to the so-called Aristotelian rules , yet contrived to produce a tragedy which, in depth of passion, poetic fervor and vigor, far surpassed anything that had so far been seen on the Parisian stage. Thus the first important French tragedy had for its subject a medieval though foreign fable, and was a compromise between the romantic and classic schools. Its spontaneousness and boldness were romantic in character; while the conduct of the struggle of the hero between love and duty, with the subordination of all other incidents, was decidedly in the classic spirit. The play was in many respects technically faulty; yet it stood, and still stands, the one practical test of a good play: it acts well.

Pierre Corneille Born June 6, 1606 in Rouen, France, to a family of lawyers, Pierre Corneille would follow in his father's footsteps. Educated by the Jesuits, he studied law and then entered the Rouen parlement in 1629. He would serve as the king's counselor in the local office of the department of waterways and forests for 21 years, and remarkably, he still found the time to write 20 plays during this period. After his retirement from the legal profession, he would write 12 more. Although Corneille is considered by most critics to be the father of French tragedy, six of his first eight plays were comedies. His first play, , was presented by a strolling troupe that happened through Rouen in 1629. The play was well received, but it was not until was revived in Paris the following year that Corneille's career began to take off. He followed this initial offering with a series of comedies and tragicomedies including Clitandre La Veuve or The Widow La Galerie du Palais or The Palace Corridor La Suivante or The Maidservant La Place Royal (1634), and

Pierre Corneille

CORNEILLE, PIERRE (1606-1684), French dramatist and poet, wa,s born at Rouen, in the rue de la Pie, on the 6th of June 1606. The house, which was long preserved, was destroyed not many years ago. His father, whose Christian name was the same,, was a-meat du roi a la Table de Marbre du P~lais, and also held the position of matre des eaux et forts in the vicoml (or bailliage, as some say) of Rouen. In this latter office he is said to have shown himself a vigorous magistrate, suppressing brigandage and plunder without tegard to his personal safety. He was ennobled in 1637 (it is said not without regard to his sons distinction), and the honor was renewed in favor of his sons Pierre and Thomas in 1669, when a general repeal of the letters of nobility recently granted had taken place. There appears, however, to be no instance on record of the poet himself assuming the de of nobility. His mothers name was Marthe le Pesant. or at the beginning of 1640, appeared Hoiace with a dedication to Richelieu. The good offices of Madame de Combalet, to whom the Ciii had been dedicated, and perhaps the satisfaction of the cardinals literary jealousy, had healed what breach there may have been, and indeed the poet was in no position to quarrel with his patron. Richelieu not only allowed him soo crowns a year, but soon afterwards, it is said, though on no certain authority, employed his omnipotence in reconciling the father of the poets mistress, Marie de Lamprire, to the marriage of the lovers (1640). In this year also Cinna appeared. A brief but very serious illness attacked him, and the death of his father the year before had increased his family anxieties by leaving his mother in very indifferent circumstances. It has, however, been recently denied that he himself was at any time poor, as older traditions asserted.

Pierre Corneille (1606-1684)

    http://www.malaspina.com/site/person_356.asp
    Pierre Corneille
One of the three great dramatists produced by France during the seventeenth century, along with Moliere and Racine . Corneille was born in 1606 at Rouen, and studied law. He moved to Paris in 1629, with the beginnings of a literary career, and soon became successful as a writer of sparkling comedies and plays written to order on behalf of Cardinal Richelieu. He only began to realise his true potential with the tragedy, Medee , in 1635, following it up with his masterpiece, Le Cid , in 1636. Corneille was more versatile than Moliere and Racine , but often considered less brilliant than either. He tended to concentrate on classical themes, and was sometimes "copied" by Racine , to the latter's advantage. He did, however, enjoy a brief collaboration with Moliere. Between 1653 and 1659, he retired from the theatre altogether, to work on translation. Between 1640 and 1662, he lived mostly at Rouen, but thereafter in Paris. He died in 1684, having produced his last play ten years earlier.
