MARIE CORELLI (1855-1924) Marie Corelli was the pseudonym of Mary Mackay, a novelist who was born in London on 1 May 1855 as the illegitimate child of Charles Mackay, who was a poet and journalist, and Mary Mills, a servant whom Mackay later married. Corelli began her career as a musician, but soon turned to writing instead and published her first novel, A Romance of Two Worlds , in 1886. Corelli became a best-selling author, and her later writings, such as Thelma: A Society Novel and Barabbas: A Dream of the World's Tragedy , established her as one of the most popular novelists in Britain, whose work often had themes relating to psychic experience and to religion. Corelli lived her adult life with Bertha Vyver. In 1901, Corelli purchased the house, Mason Croft, in Stratford-on-Avon, where they lived until Corelli's death on 21 April 1924.

Marie Corelli (1855-1924), born in London, was the illegitimate daughter of Dr. Charles Mackay and his mistress, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Mills, whom Dr. Mackay married after his first wife died. After her first book, A Romance of Two Worlds, was published in 1886, she became the best selling author in England, and the favorite of Queen Victoria, who ordered a collection of all Marie's books. Despite the savage attacks of critics, her books often broke sales records. She was the only author invited to the coronation of Edward VII, and counted among her friends Mark Twain, Ouida, the Empress Frederick of Germany, and many other writers and members of royalty.
She was the most popular novelist of the turn of the century, outselling H. G. Wells and Arthur Conan Doyle by the thousands. For thirty years she was ridiculed by reviewers and the literary eliteEdmund Gosse dismissed her as "that little milliner"but these opinions had no impact on her mass appeal. In 1895 she broke all previous publishing records, and by 1906 a Corelli novel sold 100,000 copies a year.
Marie Corelli's books were not only works of fiction, but also of faith, the occult, religion, spiritualism, mystics, mysticism, reincarnation and more...

Marriage = The dichotomy of contradictory themes which merge into a homogeneous whole
that epitomizes the fragile, ethereal nature of the human condition.
Balzac's beliefs: Family
"The viaticum of married life is resignation and self-sacrifice; the bonds of habit, he [Balzac] says, are better than love any day, while society substitutes a lasting sentiment for the mere passing frenzy of nature and creates the family as the foundation of all organized society. In short, in marriage the woman inspires, and the man must do the work, the woman must sacrifice her will, the man his selfishness." "Any intelligent woman who reads the marriage contract, and then goes into it, deserves all the consequences."
Isadora Duncan "We must refuse to submit to those institutions which are by definition sexist—marriage, the nuclear family, religions built on the myth of feminine evil." Andrea Dworkin "Marriage is a lottery in which men stake their liberty and women their happiness."
Madame Virgine de Rieux, 16th century French writer

Coleridge, ST (17721834); Collins, Wilkie (1824-1889); Conrad, Joseph(1857-1924); Corelli, Marie (1855-1924); Craik, Mrs. (1826-1887
http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. My warmest thanks go to a colleague of mine, Dr. Masahiro Komatsu (Graduate School of Languages and Cultures, Nagoya University), who was kind enough to write the C++ program.
