(1789 - 1851), American author, best known for his stories of frontier life and pioneer adventure. His most popular work is The Last of the Mohicans
He was the son of a wealthy, landowning Judge William Cooper, born in Burlington, New Jersey. The year after his birth, the family moved to Cooperstown, New York, a frontier settlement founded by Judge Cooper near Otsego Lake. Sent to Yale at thirteen, Cooper was expelled in his third year and was sent to sea, partly in the merchant marines, and then as a midshipman in the US navy. In 1811, he married Susan DeLancey and settled down as a gentleman farmer.
The first of Cooper's fifty-odd books, Precaution (1820), was a failure, but his second, The Spy (1821), was a patriotic story of the American Revolution and was an immediate success. He and his wife lived abroad from 1826 - 1833, and during this time he vigorously defended American democracy in his writings, but on his return to the United States he was so disgusted by what he saw as the tyranny of the majority, or even mob rule, that he acquired conservative and aristocratic views which made him unpopular as a social commentator.

James Femrnore Cooper (1789 -1851)
James Fenimore Cooper was born in New Jersey into the family of Judge William Cooper. When he was only a year old, he was taken to what is now Cooperstown, New York State'. Cooper was privately educated by an English tutor on the family estate, and grew up as a young aristocrat. He studied at Yale without much interest or distinction, and left the University without taking a degree. Iff 1808 he entered the US Navy; three years later he married, left the Navy, and settled down in Cooperstown to assume his inherited role as cultivated country gentleman. Cooper's first really noted novel was The Spy (1821), an absorbing tale of the American Revolution. The book met a long-felt desire of the American people to see their own heroic past, and had an immediate success. Its chief figure - the shrewd peddler Harvey Birch, who played the role of American agent to perfection and "died as he had lived, devoted to his country, and a martyr to her liberties". Harvey Birch is one of the major character creations of early American fiction. Thereafter Cooper devoted his life entirely to writing, producing thirty-three novels in addition to numerous histories and other works.

Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper was born on September 15, 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, the twelfth of thirteen children. In 1790, the family moved to Lake Otsego, in upstate New York. Early experiences in a frontier town gave Cooper the background for The Pioneers (1823), among other frontier novels. After being expelled from Yale College, in 1806 he tried to run away to sea, but his father intervened and got him a commission in the United States Navy. He sailed twice to England and served at a frontier outpost on Lake Ontario before being assigned to recruit sailors in New York City, where he met his future wife. After the deaths of his father and older brothers left him heavily in debt, Cooper cast about for a reliable source of income, and his career as a writer began. His first tale, Precaution , was published in 1820; the work and its reception were agreeable enough to encourage Cooper to continue, and his next novel, The Spy: A Tale of the Neutral Ground (1821) established him as an exciting new presence on the American literary scene.
