James Fenimore Cooper American novelist, was born at Burlington, New Jersey , on the 15th of September . Reared in the wild country round Otsego Lake, New York, on the yet unsettled estates of his father, a judge and member of Congress , he was sent to school at Albany and at New Haven, and entered Yale at fourteen, remaining for some time the youngest student on the rolls. Three years afterwards he joined the United States Navy ; but after making a voyage or two in a merchant vessel, to perfect himself in seamanship, and obtaining his lieutenancy, he married and resigned his commission (1811). He settled in Westchester County, New York , the “Neutral Ground” of his earliest American romance, and produced anonymously (1820) his first book, Precaution , a novel of the fashionable school. This was followed (1821) by The Spy , which was very successful at the date of issue; The Pioneers (1823), the first of the Leatherstocking series; and

  • A Bio-bibliographical note about James Fenimore Cooper
"Born in 1789, James Fenimore Cooper, the twelfth child in a family of thirteen was educated for a time at Yale until a series of pranks got him expelled when he was sixteen. In 1805 he joined a merchant ship bound for Europe and after obtaining his midshipman's warrant served with the US Navy until 1810. His resignation following his father's death and his decision to marry Susan De Lancey meant he returned to help run the family estate. "In 1820 he plunged into a literary career when his wife challenged his claim that he could write a better book than the English novel he was reading to her. The result was Precaution , which was quickly followed by his early successes such as The Spy The Pioneers (the first of the Leatherstocking Tales)

Cooper (1789-1851) wrote both novels and social criticism. It is his fiction that has become famous, but it is worth remembering that he also wrote books criticizing the shortcomings of democracy in his own country. He is the first important writer to be critical of the United States but he will by no means be the last. His fiction is much more memorable, however. The Last of the Mohicans , written in 1826, is the second novel in Cooper's Leatherstocking Series. Consisting of five novels, the series gets it title from one of the names applied to its frontiersman hero, Natty Bumppo, who is also called Deerslayer, Hawkeye, Pathfinder, and Leatherstocking. The five novels tell the story of Bumppo from youth to old age. The other books in the series are: The Pioneers The Prairie The Pathfinder (1840); and The Deerslayer The creation of the character of Natty Bumppo is probably the most significant thing that happened in American literature during the first 50 years of its history. Like Sir Walter Scott and another romantic writers who dealt with historical or legendary characters, Cooper, in his tales about Bumppo, unfolded an epic account, Bumppo, a frontiersman whose actions were shaped by the forest in which he lived, seems to be related in some way to the deepest meaning of the American experience itself.

    JAMES FENIMORE COOPER
A Cooper család a legelõkelõbb angol õstelepülõk közé tartozott. Óriásbirtokok urai voltak. Róluk kapta nevét Cooperstown városa, uradalmuk egykori középpontja, ahol kezdetben erõdített családi otthonuk volt. Pihenõre, üdülésre vissza-vissza is tértek a róluk elnevezett város róluk elnevezett kastélyába, a már világhíres író is ott halt meg 62 éves korában. A hat évtizedre terjedõ életnek éppen a közepén, 31 éves korában jelent meg elsõ regénye. A további 30 év szakadatlan alkotómunkával telt. Derûsen, vonzó könnyedséggel dolgozott. Az anyagot, a sokféle ismeretet és a sokféle ember megismerését az elõbbi harminc évben gyûjtötte össze, lelkes olvasással, lelkes világjárással, nemegyszer politikai súlyú vitatkozásokkal. Anyagi gondjai sohase voltak, igazi gazdag otthonból

He was the son of a wealthy, landowning Judge William Cooper, born in Burlington, New Jersey. The year after his birth, the family moved to Cooperstown, New York, a frontier settlement founded by Judge Cooper near Otsego Lake. Sent to Yale at thirteen, Cooper was expelled in his third year and was sent to sea, partly in the merchant marines, and then as a midshipman in the US navy. In 1811, he married Susan DeLancey and settled down as a gentleman farmer.
The first of Cooper's fifty-odd books, Precaution (1820), was a failure, but his second, The Spy (1821), was a patriotic story of the American Revolution and was an immediate success. He and his wife lived abroad from 1826 - 1833, and during this time he vigorously defended American democracy in his writings, but on his return to the United States he was so disgusted by what he saw as the tyranny of the majority, or even mob rule, that he acquired conservative and aristocratic views which made him unpopular as a social commentator.

Cooper, James Fenimore Cooper, James Fenimore, , American novelist, b. Burlington, N.J. He was the first important American writer to draw on the subjects and landscape of his native land in order to create a vivid myth of frontier life. In 1790 Cooper's family moved to Cooperstown, N.Y., a frontier settlement founded by his father near Otsego Lake. The landscape and history of the area was to greatly influence many of his most famous works. Sent to Yale at 13, Cooper was dismissed for a disciplinary reason in his third year. Soon after he went to sea; commissioned as a U.S. midshipman, he served until 1811, at which time he married and settled into life as a gentleman farmer. Cooper's literary career, which covers a period of 30 years and includes more than 50 publications, began in 1820 with the appearance of Precaution.

It has been filmed several times, among others in 1936 and 1992. Through his Leatherstocking series Cooper created the archetype of the 18th-century frontiersman, Natty Bumppo. He lives free, close to nature, while the settlers bring 'civilization' that destroys the wilderness. Cooper wrote over thirty novels - he considered THE PATHFINDER (1841) and THE DEERSLAYER (1840) his best works. "Few men exhibit greater diversity, or, if we may so express it, greater antithesis of character than the native warrior of North America. In war, he is daring, boastful, cunning, ruthless, self-denying, and self-devoted; in peace, just, generous, hospitable, revengeful, superstitious, modest, and commonly chaste." (from The Last of the Mohicans James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington, New Jersey, the son of Quakers, Judge William Cooper and Elisabeth Fenimore Cooper. His father was a representative of the 4th and 6th Congress, and had attained wealth by developing virgin land. The family moved to Cooperstown, New York, which Judge Cooper had founded. James Fenimore spent his youth partly on the family estate on the shores of Otsego Lake. He roamed in the primeval forest and developed a love of nature which marked his books. Cooper was educated in the village school, and in 1800-02 in the household of the rector of St. Peter's.
