Classroom Issues and Strategies
I have found it better not to insist on Cooper's formal powers at the outset, nor even on his obvious importance as an innovator and initiator in American fiction. Rather, it is effective to invite the students to discuss the substantive issues that arise in a reading of Cooper. Their importance and typicality in the American literary experience remain alive to students in various historical transformations, and Cooper presents them in unresolved and problematic formations. While the passages selected in The Heath Anthology raise obvious and important issuesof empire, of political theory, of nature versus civilization, law, conservation, religion, race, family, American historyone Leather-Stocking novel should be studied in its entirety. Depending on where the instructor places most emphasis, The Pioneers The Last of the Mohicans , and The Deerslayer are the most accessible. In any case, any study of even the selected passages requires some "story-telling" by the instructor. The discussion of The Pioneers or other novels can become, as well, a discussion of the competing claims on the student's attention to form and content: whether form is always possible or desirable; whether the unresolved issues in history are in any sense "resolved" in works of art; how the desire for narrative or didactic closure competes with the recognition of an incomplete and problematic history and political theory. Approach questions of empire, race, progress, civilization, family, law, and power, and lead back from them to the literary issues.

James Fenimore Cooper

James F. Cooper James Fenimore Cooper American novelist, was born at Burlington, New Jersey , on the 15th of September . Reared in the wild country round Otsego Lake, New York , on the yet unsettled estates of his father, a judge and member of Congress , he was sent to school at Albany and at New Haven , and entered Yale at fourteen, remaining for some time the youngest student on the rolls. Three years afterwards he joined the United States Navy ; but after making a voyage or two in a merchant vessel, to perfect himself in seamanship, and obtaining his lieutenancy, he married and resigned his commission (1811). He settled in Westchester County, New York Precaution , a novel of the fashionable school. This was followed (1821) by The Spy , which was very successful at the date of issue; The Pioneers (1823), the first of the Leatherstocking series; and The Pilot (1824), a bold and dashing sea-story. The next was Lionel Lincoln (1825), a feeble and unattractive work; and this was succeeded in 1826 by the famous Last of the Mohicans , a book that is often quoted as its author's masterpiece. Quitting America for

, novelist and historian. Son of a Federalist judge, Cooper was expelled from Yale for a dangerous prank. He then joined the navy but resigned his commission to marry. He converted to Jeffersonian principles, but then tried to live as an eighteenth-century gentleman while the fevers of Jacksonian democracy swept the land. At the height of his popularity as a novelist, he took his family to Europe, and during his seven-year stay, he wrote a fascinating assessment of his native land, Notions of the Americans (1829), and gathered the materials for four travel books. A Letter to His Countrymen (1834) was a bitter attack on American provincialism. Upon his return in 1833 he retreated to Cooperstown and plunged into a series of lawsuits designed to force the townspeople to respect the sanctity of private property and truth in journalism. The American Democrat (1838), designed as a textbook for high school students, lectured Americans on their political and social responsibilities. By the time of his death Cooper had developed an international reputation as America's "national novelist," but he was also a keen observer of the political and cultural life of his nation, an accomplished controversialist, and a fine naval historian. His studies of naval history included

James Fenimore Cooper The Last of the Mohicans The Prairie Introduction
Novelist, born at Burlington, New Jersey, and educated at Yale College. In 1808 he entered the U.S. Navy, in which he remained for 3 years, an experience which was of immense future value to him as an author. It was not until 1821 that his first novel, Precaution , appeared. Its want of success did not discourage him, and in the next year (1822), he produced The Spy , which at once gained him a high place as a story-teller. He wrote over 30 novels, of which may be mentioned The Pioneers The Pilot The Last of the Mohicans The Prairie The Red Rover The Bravo The Pathfinder, The Deerslayer The Two Admirals (1842), and Satanstoe (1845). He also wrote a Naval History of the United States (1839). Cooper was possessed of remarkable narrative and descriptive powers, and could occasionally delineate character. He had the merit of opening up an entirely new field, and giving expression to the spirit of the New World, but his true range was limited, and he sometimes showed a lack of judgment in choosing subjects with which he was not fitted to deal. He was a proud and combative but honest and estimable man. Links Calender of Authors Resource site which contains a biography and further information on J.F. Cooper.

III. JAMES FENIMORE COOPER
While the genius of Irving was winning for a newly developed American literature the recognition and respect of our kinsmen in England, his contemporary, James Fenimore Cooper, suddenly appeared in the field of letters to share in the distinction and the honor of widely recognized literary success. Our first notable writer of fiction, Cooper was in no sense a follower of the first American romancer, Charles Brockden Brown, nor an imitator of his fantastic and abnormal types. He stands rather as the originator of the novel of adventure in our literature, and is frequently termed "the American Scott." It is remarkable that many of the best English novelists have begun their careers as professional storytellers almost by accident. This is true of Richardson and Fielding, the fathers of the modern novel, as it was of their great forerunner, Defoe . Walter Scott was driven to romancing in prose when Lord Byron invaded so successfully his chosen field of metrical romance, Dickens and Thackeray stumbled into fiction through the hedgerows of journalism.
