Moncure Conway
Moncure Daniel Conway (1832-1907) was a clergyman, abolitionist, scholar, and author, best known for his outspoken opposition to slavery in the decade prior to and during the Civil War. A Virginian from an upper class family, his views on race, politics, and theology isolated him for many years from his family, his native state, and his country. The last forty-five years of his life were spent largely in England and France. The second child of Walter Peyton and Margaret (Daniel) Conway, Moncure was born on March 17, 1832 in Falmouth, Stafford County, Virginia. His father was a wealthy gentleman farmer, a slaveholder, and county judge; his mother a homemaker and homeopathic physician. Both were Methodists, his father having left the Episcopal church, his mother the Presbyterian. Moncure's opposition to slavery came from his mother and from his boyhood experiences. His father and three brothers remained staunchly pro-slavery. There were others who were associated with the Transcendental group in Concord who should be acknowledged. Some were Unitarian ministers, others were late-comers. Perhaps one might best call them transcendental "fellow-travelers."

PowerPoint Slides Introduction Industrialization Feminism ... Bibliography Obscurity was the normal fate for women physicians. When Nancy Blanche Jenison , M.D. died in 1960 (7 November), a brief obituary appeared for her in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Her death was mentioned in the Johns Hopkins Magazine (March 1961) without detail. Nothing appeared in the New York newspapers. Only The Washington Post (November 12, 1960, p. C3) carried a full announcement: “Memorial services for Dr. Nancy Jenison, who died… in New York City at the age of 85, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Washington Ethical Society, 1822 Massachusetts av. N.W.
“Dr. Jenison was a longtime resident of Washington…
“She was raised in Chicago, where her father was a prominent architect, and was a graduate of Wells College, Aurora, N.Y. After teaching high school for several years, she went to Johns Hopkins University, and received her M.D. She practiced medicine in New York for some 20 years. Upon retirement she came to Washington, where she worked with various groups for improved race relations.”
