Conrad, Joseph Biography
Polish-born English novelist and short-story writer, a dreamer, adventurer, and gentleman. In his famous preface to THE NIGGER OF THE 'NARCISSUS' (1897) Conrad crystallized his often quoted goal as a writer: "My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you fell - it is, above all, to make you see. That - and no more, and it is everything." Among Conrad's most popular works are LORD JIM (1900) and HEART OF DARKNESS (1902). Conrad discouraged interpretation of his sea novels through evidence from his life, but several of his novels drew the material, events, and personalities from his own experiences in different parts of the world. While making his first voyages to the West Indies, Conrad met the Corsican Dominic Cervoni, who was later model for his characters filled with a thirst for adventure. "We live, as we dream - alone." (from Heart of Darkness Joseph Conrad was born in Berdichev, in the Ukraine, in a region that had once been a part of Poland but was then under Russian rule. His father Apollo Korzeniowski was an aristocrat without lands, a poet and translator of English and French literature. The family estates had been sequestrated in 1839 following an anti-Russian rebellion. As a boy the young Joseph read Polish and French versions of English novels with his father. When Apollo Korzeniowski became embroiled in political activities, he was sent to exile with his family to Volgoda, northern Russia, in 1861.

The Secret Agent
Joseph Conrad
Synopsis
From the seed of an actual attempt, made in 1894, to blow up the Greenwich Observatory, Conrad created one of his most tense and chilling plots. The world of The Secret Agent - the world of law and order, fatuous civil servants and corrupt policement - is grotesquely mirrored in its underworld, a squalid terrorist landscape inhabited by, among others, the Professor, who always carries a bomb in his pocket and Verloc the pornographer, deceiver and spy. Repulsive characters and amoral caricatures collaborate to form a black satire on English society, a satire sharpened into focus with a portrait of "family life": Winnie Verloc's story relentlessly told to its "anarchic end of utter desolation, madness and despair".
First lines
Mr Verloc, going out in the morning, left his shop nominally in charge of his brother-in-law. It could be done, because there was very llittle business at any time, and practically none at all before the evening. Mr Verloc cared but little about his ostensible business. And, moreover, his wife was in charge of his brother-in-law.

Conrad, Joseph The Mirror of the Sea and a Personal Record (World's Classics)
Oxford ; New York Oxford University Press, Underlining, Edges Worn 1989 Paperback Acceptable
The Mirror of the Sea offers, in Conrad's own words, ''a very intimate revelation...of my relation with the sea.'' This imaginative piece of non-fiction passionately explores ships and their captains, storms, oceans, and all other aspects of a sea-going life that Conrad experienced for twenty years. A Personal Record, Conrad's autobiography, provides invaluable insight into the thoughts of a writer whose experience of repression in Poland and whose love and knowledge of the sea formed a basis for his novels and tales of adventure.

JOSEPH CONRAD (1857-1924)
    Heart of darkness
Nostromo : a Tale of the Seaboard

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was born in Berdichev, Ukraine, on December 3rd, 1857. He was born Polish but he would become renowned for his English short stories and novels. His father, Apollo Korzeniowski, worked as a translator of English and French literature, so Joseph had a significant exposure to literature while still a boy.
In 1861 his family was exiled to Northern Russia as a result of his father's political activities. Then in 1869, both of Conrad's parents died of tuberculosis and he went to Switzerland to live with his uncle. Conrad attended school in Kraków but he dreamed of the sea and in the 1870's he joined the French merchant marines. While working on a ship Conrad made voyages to the West Indies and was even involved in arms smuggling. Eventually Conrad joined the British merchant navy and swiftly climbed the ranks. By 1886 he was commanding his own ship and was given British citizenship. It was at this time that he officially changed his name to Joseph Conrad.
Conrad spent the next part of his life sailing all over the world, it was this experience that provided him with material on the exotic locations of many of his novels. He visited Australia, various islands in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific, South America, and he even sailed up the Congo River in Africa. In 1894 at the age of 36 Conrad finally left the sea behind him and settled down in England. Two years later he married an Englishwoman by the name of Jessie George, and it was with her that he had two sons.

Joseph Conrad
Joseph Conrad was born in 1857 in Polish Ukraine. An orphan by the age of eleven, he studied for six years at St. Petersburg University, which he abandoned before earning a degree. Conrad left Poland in 1874. He spent his next years in France, learning a second language and the fundamentals of seamanship. The friends he met there introduced him to drama, opera and theater. At the same time, he was also strengthening his maritime contacts, and soon he became an observer on pilot boats. The workers he met on the ships, as well as all his experiences there, laid the groundwork for much of the vivid detail in his novels. In the summer of 1889, while in England, Conrad began his writing career by starting his first novel, Almayer's Folly . He chose to write in English, his third language. A journey to the Congo in 1890 was Conrad's inspiration to write Heart of Darkness , his best-known work, which expressed his outrage with the practices of colonialism. He returned to England, and soon after had to deal with the death of his beloved guardian-uncle. The money left to the author gave him the financial security to make writing his occupation. Conrad's first novel was published in 1894, the same year he met Jessie George, his future wife. Subsequently, his circle of friends included contemporary authors such as Stephen Crane and Henry James. He continued writing, while traveling back to Poland and finally to America, where he remained until dying from a heart attack in 1924.
