    Background Information

    WILLIAM CONGREVE
William Congreve (1670-1729) was born on January 24, 1670,
at Bardsey, near Leeds, in Yorkshire. He was the son of an army
officer who became the steward to the Earl of Cork. Congreve
studied at Kilkenny School, where he received a classical
education. At the same time, Jonathan Swift, who was two years his senior, was a student at Kilkenny College. Congreve then entered Trinity College in Dublin at the age of sixteen; he was again a contemporary of Jonathan Swift at Trinity. Congreve’s interest in drama developed at Trinity. It is significant that the formative years of Congreve’s life were spent in Ireland, since Ireland has become almost synonymous

When 'tis not w i t h ambition j o i n d ." ~ William Congreve As ironic as any play he wrote, when English playwright and poet William Congreve (1670-1729) released his Way of the World (1700), the play failed terribly. This so discouraged him that he quit the stage, retiring to live as a country gentleman. "Say what you will, 'tis better to be left than never to have been loved," he wrote in Act 2 of the famous five-act play. Often revived, Way of the World is considered his masterpiece, "the best of the Restoration plays." A comedy of manners and satire of the time he lived; its beautiful heroine Millamant offered actresses a fine comedic role. "Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned," he observed. Born to genteel society of Leeds, Congreve's other major plays included The Old Bachelor The Double-Dealer (1693), and Love for Love Praised by Samuel Johnson , Congreve was a wizard with comic dialogue and intricate plot twists which poked fun at his society's rules about love and marriage "Music has charms to soothe a savage breast," Congreve believed, "to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak."

    William Congreve
William Congreve was born in Yorkshire and was educated at Kilkenny School and Trinity College, Dublin. He went on to study law at the Middle Temple but did not pursue this as a profession, preferring instead to write novels and plays. His first major play, The Old Bachelor (1693), brought him instant fame, which was consolidated by two further comedies, The Double Dealer (1694) and Love for Love (1695), and a tragedy, The Mourning Bride (1697). Another comedy, The Way of the World (1700), was not as successful, and this, combined with an attack on the morality of his plays by Jeremy Collier, a literary cleric, caused him to give up playwrighting. He continued as the manager of Lincoln's Inn Theatre until 1705, however, but afterwards confined his writing to masques, prose, and poetry. Congreve was an entertaining and colourful character. He enjoyed the friendship and respect of his literary contemporaries and counted the Duchess of Marlborough and the actress Mrs. Bracegirdle among his mistresses. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, his death having been hastened by a carriage accident the previous year. False though She be
