Hermes, "Prometheus Bound", by Aeschylus QUICK INTRODUCTION When Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods, was young and trying to establish his rule, he was challenged by a group of ferocious Titans, who tried to keep him from gaining power. A long and terrible war ensued, with all the Olympian gods joined against the Titans, who were led by Zeus' father Cronus and mighty Atlas. After ten years of fighting, and with the help of the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires (The Hundred-Handed-Ones), Zeus and his fellow Olympians defeated the enemy. Only a few Titans, particularly Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus, fought on the side of Zeus, against their fellow Titans. You see, Prometheus was very wise - wiser even than most of the gods - and foresaw the winner of the battle between the Olympians and the Titans. He persuaded his impulsive brother Epimetheus to also fight on the side of Zeus against gigantic Atlas and his army. Once Zeus emerged victorious he granted the brothers some just rewards.

    Biographical Sketch
Prudencio De Pereda was born in Brooklyn, New York's Spanish colony on February 18, 1912, to Spanish immigrant parents. He was first encouraged to be a writer after reading Ernest Hemingway as an undergraduate Spanish major at City College of New York (1929-1933). He published his first story in 1936, and during the Spanish Civil War, met Hemingway. The two collaborated on the commentary for the films SPAIN IN FLAMES and THE SPANISH EARTH, espousing the Loyalist Republican viewpoint. During this seminal period of Pereda's writing, his activities brought him into contact with a number of other young New York literati who were similarly affected by the war in Spain and other "radical" causes. During the 1930s and early 1940s, De Pereda wrote short stories that were published in several small circulation magazines, as well as in better-known periodicals such as COMMENTARY, NEW REPUBLIC, STORY, and NATION. De Pereda's stories have been anthologized often, and appeared in the O. HENRY MEMORIAL PRIZE VOLUME (1937) and O'BRIEN'S BEST SHORT STORIES (1938, 1940).

English 683 The Irish Short Story cmay@csulb.edu The most common assumption about Irish fiction is that the Irish are particularly gifted as short-story writers. However, because of Ireland's historically marginal status in relation to England and because of the short story's historically marginal status as a genre, many of the authors covered in this course are, with the exception of James Joyce, neglected in the English curriculum in America, in spite of the fact that many Irish stories are centrally important to the development of Irish fiction in particular and the modern short story in general.

Dear Oblates and Friends of Portsmouth, In the familiar story of the woman taken in adultery Jesus is asked by the Scribes and Pharisees whether she should be stoned according to the Law of Moses, at that time obsolete, and, therefore, an obvious attempt to trap him. Jesus neatly places them on the defensive by teaching them the lesson of concentrating on their own faults, so exposing their hypocrisy. The lesson is not one of leniency or tolerance of a serious moral fault; it is rather the necessity for each of us to recognize our own sinful state rather than look on the fallen condition of others and judge them. Pride and hypocrisy can be worse sins than those of the flesh. Judge not that you be not judged is the implicit admonition that Jesus gives to those who would be guardians of the Law. from THE WAY OF THE CROSS Padraic Colum (1881 – 1972) Station XII: The Crucifixion The birds are flying home
