Wilkie Collins Books
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
A story of confused identities with unsuspected surprises and dramatic compulsiveness.
The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins
A fabulous yellow diamondan ancient talisman which had been looted from the holy Hindu city of Somnauthbecomes the dangerous inheritance of Rachel Verinder. And when the Moonstone disappears, what seems like a simple case turns into a masterpiece of detection and suspense.
The Haunted Hotel by Wilkie Collins
The Law and the Lady by Wilkie Collins
Probably the first full-length novel with a woman detective as its heroine, The Law and the Lady (1875) is a fascinating example of Collins' later fiction. Valeria Valerie Woodville's first act as a married woman is to sign her name incorrectly in the marriage register; this slip is followed by a gradual disclosure of secrets about her husband's earlier life, each of which leads to another set of questions and enigmas. Developing many of the techniques at work in The Moonstone in bizarre and unexpected ways, and employing both Gothic and fantastic elements, The Law and the Lady adds a significant dimension to the history of the detective novel.
The Dead Secret by Wilkie Collins
Shocking, long-hidden secrets lie at the heart of this classic tale of mystery and suspense from the author of "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White."

English novelist, whose unconventional private life and determination to tackle social issues disconcerted his audience. Many of Wilkie Collins's novels contain sympathetic portraits of physically abnormal individuals. Critics often credit Collins with the invention of the English detective novel. While he was aware of the work of Poe and Gaboriau, he worked in the mainstream of Victorian domestic and social fiction. Sergeant Cuff from Collins's novel THE MOONSTONE (1868) became a prototype of the detective hero in English fiction. "Good night, Mr. Betteredge," he said. "And mind, if you ever take to growing roses, the white moss rose is all the better for not being budded on the dog rose, whatever the gardener may say to the contrary!"
"What are you doing here?" I asked. "Why are you not in your proper bed?"

"Laudanum - divine laudanum - was his only friend" "who was the man who invented laudenaum ? I thank him from the bottom of my heart. whoever he was .... I have had six delicious hiours of oblivion ; I have woek up with myu mind comoposed ; O have written s perfect little letter ; I have drunk my cup of tea with a real relish of it ; and I have dawdles over my morning toilet with an excquiste sense of relief and all trhough the modest little bottle of drops which I see on my bedroom chimney-piece at the moment. Drops, you are a darling ! If I love nothing else, I love you !"
Wilkie Collins (1824 - 1889)
Note made on a spring morning Wilkie Collins had a prodigious opium habit. He is famous for writing one of the first detective-novels in British fiction, The Moonstone (1868). Opium is central to the plot. The moonstone of the title is a sacred Hindu diamond "‘growing and lessening in lustre with the waxing and waning of the moon". The gem is stolen by a laudanum-intoxicated thief who later remembers nothing of the crime.

Wilkie Collins
William Wilkie Collins was born in London on January 8, 1824, the oldest son of a fashionable artist. He was named after Sir David Wilkie, a friend of the family. After an early career in business, he studied law and was admitted to the bar, though he apparently never practiced. He also tried his hand at painting, and wrote many articles and stories that were published anonymously. A biography of his father was his first major published work, the success of which encouraged him to write for a living. His first novel, a historical work called Antonina or The Fall of Rome , was published in 1850. In 1851, Collins was introduced to Charles Dickens by a mutual friend. The two formed a lasting friendship, and worked together on Dickens’s magazines, Household Words and All the Year Round , where many of Collins’s works appeared in serial form. Collins was one of the pioneers of the mystery and suspense genre, and his most famous novels include The Woman in White and The Moonstone . The latter was mostly dictated while he was bed-ridden and suffering from gout. He died in 1889.

Sometimes the place looked as if "it had hundreds of suffocating people under it - all struggling to get to the surface, and sinking lower and lower in the dreadful deeps!" The place was never the same; it was always new and unpredictable. The description of the Shivering Sand is of great importance. The author put too much sense into it. "When the hide flows over the quicksand, the sea seems to leave the waves behind it on the bank, and rolls its waters in smoothly with a heave, and covers the sand in silence. A lonesome and horrid retreat... It looks as if it had hundreds of suffocating people under it..." What a sombre picture! It's filled with loneliness and melancholy. At the same time the atmosphere is strained. There are hundreds of sufferings in it that are beyond any expression. But in the next landscape absolutely different emotions are reflected: "The sunlight poured its unclouded beauty on every object I could see. The exquisite freshness of the air made the mere act of living and breathing a luxury. Even the lonely little bay welcomed the morning with a show of cheerfulness..." This description fascinates by its vividness, unspotted beauty and impressionable picturesqueness. It's bright and lovely in its spirit. There nature is like a connection between the disharmonious and intricate life of a human being and the perfect and unspotted ideal, which can exist only in one's dreams.

Unafraid to question Victorian social mores, Collins never married but maintained two families. He lived both with Caroline Graves (whom he met in a midnight encounter such as is described in The Woman in White), and with Martha Rudd. In later life, Collins became addicted to opium, and from 1870 to his death in 1889, his novels became concerned with social issues, and are considered inferior to his earlier output. However, in recent years, Collins’ oeuvre has received renewed critical attention, a recent biography hailing him as the king of inventors.
