Antonina (1850), a historical romance. He found his true field, however, in the novel of modern life, in which his power lies chiefly in the construction of a skilful plot, which holds the attention of the reader and baffles his curiosity to the last. In Count Fosco, however, he has contributed an original character to English fiction. Among his numerous novels two, The Woman in White (1860), and The Moonstone (1868), stand out pre-eminent. The Fiction of Wilkie Collins
The 1863 stage adaptation of No Name, written by W. B. Bernard, with the approval of Wilkie Collins: No Name: A Drama in Five Acts This web site provides accurate texts of the novels and stories of Wilkie Collins (1824-1889). A close friend of Charles Dickens, Collins is one of the most readable (and surprisingly modern) of the Victorian novelists. Most of the works here are based on the New York Collier edition of 1900 , and are thus in the public domain. I have silently corrected obvious misspellings and typographical errors; however, no attempt has been made to force the spelling to conform either to British standards or to American ones. Plain text versions of many of these works have been donated to Project Gutenberg. The texts of Wilkie's most famous novels, The Woman in White and The Moonstone are available offsite. The short novel The Haunted Hotel is also offsite. With these three exceptions, this web site contains the complete fiction of Wilkie Collins, as well as the letters Charles Dickens wrote to Collins. Please scroll down to see the Wilkie Collins titles available for reading...

Collins, Wilkie
English writer, often regarded as the originator of detective fiction. He was born in London. Unsuccessful at business and law, he preferred to write. In 1851 he began a close association with Charles Dickens , with whom he collaborated on the novel No Thoroughfare (1867). Collins's mystery thriller The Woman in White (1860) and the detective story The Moonstone (1868), which first appeared in periodicals edited by Dickens, are considered masterpieces of their respective genres. In both, although the greatest emphasis is placed on the construction of a plot designed to baffle the reader, characterization is also important. The vivid portrayal of Sergeant Cuff in The Moonstone is the first study in English fiction of a detective actually at work. Among Collins's other works are travel sketches, the historical romance Antonina, or the Fall of Rome (1850), the series of ghost stories After Dark (1856), and the novels No Name (1862) and Armadale (1866). His later fiction deals with social problems, mixed with elements of mystery and melodrama.

Our first book - April 1992, Eliane's House
    Synopsis
The Moonstone, a yellow diamond of unearthly beauty, originally stolen from a shrine in India, is given to Rachel Verinder as an eighteenth birthday present and, on that same night, stolen again...
    First lines
I address these lines - written in India - to my relatives in England. My object is to explain the motive which has induced me to refuse the right hand of friendship to my cousin, John Herncastle. The reserve which I have hitherto maintained in this matter has been misinterpreted by members of my family whose good opinion I cannot consent to forfeit. I request them to suspend their decision until they have read my narrative. And I declare, on my word of honour, that what I am now about to write is, strictly and literally, the truth. The private difference between my cousin and me took its rise in a great public event in which we were both concerned - the storming of Seringapatam, under General Barid, on the 4th May, 1799.
