William O. Mathes
WILLIAM O. MATHES. There is no more enthusiastic Kansan than William O. Mathes of McPherson. He knows the state not merely as a great and prosperous modern commonwealth, but by intimate experience with this country when it was in its pioneer stages. He won his competence on a Kansas homestead and he and his people were among the earliest settlers in McPherson County. When he came to legal age and was properly qualified Mr. Mathes in 1875 filed on a homestead in McPherson County three miles north of the county seat. That hometead proved his opportunity in life. He developed it, farmed and raised stock, gradually prospered, and from it derived ample provision for the rearing of a family of five children. Mr. Mathes lived on the old farm for thirty-two years, and in 1908 he retired and moved to McPherson. Since coming to McPherson he has filled a place in the city council four years and has held several other minor offices. In 1916 he was democratic candidate for representative from McPherson County. He has done his part to advance the public welfare of the town and county. Mr. Mathes is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Methodist Episcopal Church. On January 16, 1876, soon after taking possession of his homestead, he married Miss Ida C. Lamer. Mrs. Mathes was born on a farm in Jackson County, Illinois, May 14, 1856, a daughter of August C. and Ellen (Corgan) Lamer. Her parents were also natives of Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Mathes are the parents of five children, two sons and three daughters: Carrie, born December 19, 1877; Mary Ann, born November 16, 1879; Dora May, born January 13, 1881; William, born February 15, 1883; and Thomas Hendricks, born March 25, 1885, and named for the then vice president of the United States. All these children were born on the old homestead in McPherson County.

The memory of yellow roses. When the Colby family donated Carrollcroft, the home in which they had lived for four generations, to the Stanstead Historical Society in 1992, the donation came with the house's entire furnishings and with a very important collection of family archives. The Valentine project we submit today has to do with the personal papers of Charles William Colby (1867-1955) and Emma Frances Cobb (1866-1945) a childhood friend whom he married in 1897. Charles William was the oldest son of Charles Carroll Colby (1827-1907) who built Carrollcroft in 1859. Charles William was the first chair of history at McGill University. He was also a fine poet, as illustrated by the Valentine poems that he wrote for Emma for the most part of their long married life. Charles William and Emma Frances Cobb had two children, Charles Carroll II, born in 1905 and Mary Pierce, born in 1909. Their mother, Emma Frances, who was a talented artist, painted several fine and sensitive portraits of the two children.

94. Almanzo & Laura Ingalls Wilder's Relatives

Research into historical documentation of the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder has been a hobby (my husband would call it a "passion") of mine for many years. While doing genealogical research on my own family at the National Archives, I was unexpectedly led to an 1880 Federal Census page from the Dakota Territory (later to become North and South Dakota) and was startled to find the family of Charles and Caroline Ingalls among the names listed before me. Up to that time, I had not read Laura's books and rarely watched TV's "Little House on the Prairie." Until this historical "revelation," I had not realized that the Ingalls were real people. My intrigue with this fact took me back to my local library where I consumed all nine of Laura's juvenile "fiction" in short order. Inspired by her clear portrait of pioneer life, I began looking for biographical information about the author of these captivating stories of American history. Unlike today - when there are literally dozens of biographies about Laura Ingalls Wilder - very little information was available at that time. So, I decided to start my search for facts about the Ingalls and Wilder families in the documents that had "gotten me hooked" in the first place - census records. Upon inspection of the census pages, I suddenly realized that there were several discrepancies between data found there and what Laura had written in her books. For example: The 1880 census gave Carrie's birthplace as Kansas, but she appears as "baby Carrie" in Laura's first book, "Little House in the Big Woods," which is set in Wisconsin and takes place *before* the Ingalls moved to Kansas (the setting of Laura's third book, "Little House on the Prairie"). Similarly, the 1860 census for Malone, New York, (when Almanzo was only a year old) mentions a "Laura A. Wilder - age 16. There was no mention of a *sister* named Laura in "Farmer Boy" - Laura Ingalls Wilder's biography of a year of her husband's life as a child in upstate New York.
