T-Z AFHS volunteers Joan Hudson and Heather Williams, with the assistance of Linda Williams, compiled this data from information supplied by the Chevra Kadusha Burial Society of Calgary. It was verified by checking against the photographs and information held by the Jewish Historical Society in its office at the Calgary Jewish Centre . The material was compiled in 1999-2000 from burial information recorded until 1998. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, but human errors are always possible. Confirming the information with personal observation or other sources is always advisable. Basic information has been provided on this website. The French title is more provocative: Un jour, ils auront des peintres Annie Cohen-Solal: Thank you, Joanna and Dan, for welcoming me here, and thank you, Edith, for introducing me and organizing this get-together. I could not think of a better place to speak about my work, because I find on your shelves so many of the books that I have in my own library. I sense a sort of European-American atmosphere here. This book took me five years to write, but altogether ten years to produce. I first thought about it when I arrived in New York to work at the French Embassy. I had just completed a book on Sartre, and you know talking about Jean-Paul Sartre in the United States is not a great assignment, because apart from the Partisan Review crowd, who had met him, he is not exactly a hero in this country, to say the least. I remember interviewing William Phillips, Lionel Abel, William Barrett, as well as many others. So, when I came here, I had in mind another project, which was to investigate the years between 1944 and 1948, when the cultural hegemony of Europe shifted to the Unites States. I wanted to know more about this period, to find out how the Europeans came to realize that things would not continue as usual, and how they reacted to this change.

The Dr. Ernst Waldinger Collection The Waldinger collection consists of a generous gift to the Vanderbilt Central Library from the family of Dr. Ernst Waldinger. Dr. Waldinger was a scholar and poet in Vienna in the early twentieth century and active in Vienna's literary and intellectual circles. After the 1938 Anschluss, he emigrated to the United States, where he later became professor of German literature and language at Skidmore College in New York state. After his retirement in 1965, he continued to write lyric poetry in which he expressed his longing for his lost homeland. The collection is made up of works of drama, fiction, and poetry in unique editions. Over one hundred of the titles in the collection include personal inscriptions "in Freundschaft" to Dr. Waldinger from fellow writers who went on to achieve fame, such as Oskar Maria Graf. About forty anthologies of the time period include works by Ernst Waldinger himself. LIBRARY: CENTRAL
