Brevity
Anecdotes, humor, and quotations on the topic of brevity from the IdeaBank® on-line service. An ancient African tribe has this rule: a speaker must stand on one leg while addressing the audience. As soon as his second foot touches the ground, he must stop. Say what you have to say and the first time you come to a sentence with a grammatical endingsit down. Winston Churchill (1874-1965) Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. Ecclesiastes 5:2 Few sinners are saved after the first twenty minutes of a sermon. Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) (1835-1910)
American writer and humorist
Hannibal Courier-Post, March 6, 1835 The luncheon speaker was told to begin his talk promptly at 1:15 p.m., and he asked the club president how long he should talk. "Talk as long as you'd like," replied the President. "We all leave at 1:30 anyhow." Speaking of brevity, the shortest inaugural address was George Washington'sjust 135 words. The longest was William Henry Harrison's in 1841. He delivered a two-hour, 9,000 word inaugural speech into the teeth of a freezing northeast wind. The new President of the United States came down with a cold the following day, and a month later he died of pneumonia.

In 1861 Union troops under General U S Grant landed here to occupy Paducah for duration of the war. Clara Barton arrived, 1884, on "Josh V Throop" during American Red Cross' first major flood relief operation. The city of Paducah is protected along its river front from floods by the mighty Ohio River. As part of the city's beautification project, outstanding murals have been painted on the face of the concrete levee on the river side of First Street. The paintings are shown to follow as they existed on 2/20/01, from west to east along First Street. This scene shows Broadway, Paducah's main street, in the 1940's when the downtown area was the center for the community's retail, business, and entertainment activities. Such downtown landmarks as the Guthrie Building, 1937 Post Office, Palmer House Hotel, Citizens Bank Building, and Columbia Theater are depicted. Cast-iron storefronts, manufactured by local foundries, remain from the earlier Victorian era when downtown Paducah experienced enormous economic growth and prosperity. (From a 1940's postcard).

    Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia
