Miscellaneous Contents of the Papyrus Collection The Carlsberg Papyrus Collection contains more than 500 inventoried papyri in addition to a considerable amount of material that has yet to be catalogued. The collection is made up from two principal sources; papyri purchased by the Carlsberg Foundation for the Egyptological Institute (now part of the Carsten Niebuhr Institute) - these form the bulk of the collection - and papyri formerly in the possession of Prof. H. O. Lange. It further includes a two Coptic codices purchased from Carl Schmidt, a few papyri formerly in the possession of Prof. Sander-Hansen, and the Teaching of King Merikare which was purchased from Ludwig Borchardt. All the papyri are now referred to as the Carlsberg Papyri. The papyri were purchased on the antiquities market from the beginning of the century until the 1950's. The vast majority come from Tebtunis, and a smaller amount from Edfu, Gebelein, Hawara, Hermopolis, Mendes (carbonized Greek papyri) and Thebes. The Tebtunis material falls into two main groups: the documentary texts dating to 2nd and 1st cent. BC. and the literary texts dating to the 1st and 2nd cent. AD. Most, if not all, of the latter were found within the temple precinct in a storage area that is believed to have been the Temple Library or part thereof.

A REPORT ON THE EFFECTS OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD IN THE UK AND WORLDWIDE PAUL WADDINGTON Reuters, United Kingdom ABSTRACT Since 1994, Reuters has conducted three studies into issues of information in the business world. The first To know or not to know: the politics of information, revealed that despite the proliferation of office technology, we were still a race of information misers. The second: Information as an asset: the invisible goldmine, showed how companies failed to realise the value of their information. In October 1996, Reuters conducted the first ever study into Information Overload, called Dying for information, which revealed the significant extent to which overload is becoming a problem in the information age. This paper examines the findings and implications of this research. DYING FOR INFORMATION: BACKGROUND The Dying for information study launched by Reuters in October 1996 was undertaken principally for the business world. Reuters produces 27,000 pages of information per second.

Carsten Niebuhr Institute Dansk version Tell Mashnaqa Tell Mashnaqa is located at the Khabur, a tributary river to the Euphrates, about 30 kilometers south of Hassake in northeastern Syria. It is of moderarte size covering less than four hectares. To the west the mound rises to a height of more than 11 meters forming a so-called High Mound. The eastern part of the tell is a low and a flat mound, rising four meters above plain level. The total volume of the mound is calculated to c. 75,000 m³. The formation is built up of remains from several thousand years of human activities at the site, including habitation, burials and midden deposits. The high mound and the adjacent areas have been the target for archaeological investigations during the past ten years by a French and a Danish expedition. The Danish expedition concerned the oldest remains at the site belonging to the Ubaid period. During the Ubaid southern Mesopotamian culture for the first time spread into a vast geographical region reaching the Arabian Gulf in the southeast and the Syrian Mediterranean coast in the west. In the following millennia this culture developed into the better known Sumerian civilization. This homepage summarizes the results of the Danish arcaheological expedition to Tell Mashnaqa and presents the associated research projects and scientists. All the photos and drawings shown are described in the Slide Show and may be downloaded in a larger version by clicking on the image.
