Political Party: Democratic With Bill Clinton the story of American presidents of Ulster descent comes right up to the present day. President Clinton's grandfather five times removed was one Lucas Cassidy who left Rosslea in Co Fermanagh for America some time around 1750. A scroll bearing testimony to Clinton's membership of the Ciao Cassidy is displayed for all to see in the Oval Office. Bill Clinton was born on 19 August 1946 in the town of Hope, Arkansas, making him the first president to be born after the Second World War. After attending Georgetown University, Clinton won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford (1968-70) from where he progressed to Yale Law School. He was appointed Professor of Law at the University of Arkansas in 1974 at the age of 28, but after serving only two years he made the crucial move into full-time politics, with his election as Attorney General of Arkansas, progressing to the governorship in 1978. With the exception of a two year gap (1980-82) Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas from 1978 up to his election as president of the United States.

Clinton, an international relations graduate from Georgetown University in 1968 and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University 1968-1970, earned his Law Degree from Yale University in 1974. Upon graduation, he returned to his home state to open a private law practice and later taught law at the University of Arkansas before he entered public service in 1977. He launched his political career in 1974 at the age of 28 with a run for a U.S. congressional seat. Losing by a small margin to a powerful incumbent, he went on to be elected Arkansas ¡¯s Attorney General in 1976. Two years later, he was elected Governor of Arkansas at the age of 32, the youngest among the nation's 50 governors. In 1980 he lost his first re-election bid, but he made a stunning comeback to the governor¡¯s office in 1982 and was re-elected in 1984, 1986, and again in 1990, becoming the nation's longest serving governor.
