Biography
Quote Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe IV on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas. His father, an automobile-parts salesman, died in a car accident three months before Bill was born. His mother, Virginia Cassidy, married Roger Clinton, an automobile dealer, when Bill was seven years old. The family moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas, where Bill and his younger half brother, Roger, Jr., attended public schools. His mother often engaged Bill in political discussions and encouraged his ambitions. Growing up had its difficulties, however, because his stepfather was an alcoholic who sometimes beat his mother. Virginia and Roger eventually divorced but soon remarried, when Bill was 15. As a gesture Bill had his last name legally changed to Clinton. Bill participated in many activities, including student government, at Hot Springs High School. In the summer of 1963 he was chosen to attend the American Legion Boys State, a government and leadership conference, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was elected a senator and given the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. where he shook hands with President John F. Kennedy

William J. Clinton During the administration of William Jefferson Clinton, the U.S. enjoyed more peace and economic well being than at any time in its history. He was the first Democratic president since Franklin D. Roosevelt to win a second term. He could point to the lowest unemployment rate in modern times, the lowest inflation in 30 years, the highest home ownership in the country's history, dropping crime rates in many places, and reduced welfare roles. He proposed the first balanced budget in decades and achieved a budget surplus. As part of a plan to celebrate the millennium in 2000, Clinton called for a great national initiative to end racial discrimination. After the failure in his second year of a huge program of health care reform, Clinton shifted emphasis, declaring "the era of big government is over." He sought legislation to upgrade education, to protect jobs of parents who must care for sick children, to restrict handgun sales, and to strengthen environmental rules.

Hope, Ark. William Jefferson Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe IV in Hope, Ark., on Aug. 19, 1946. He was named for his father, who was killed in an automobile accident before Clinton's birth. Virginia Kelley, his mother, eventually married Roger Clinton, a car dealer, whose surname the future president later adopted. In high school in Hot Springs, Ark., Clinton considered becoming a doctor, but politics beckoned after a meeting with President John F. Kennedy in Washington, DC, on a Boys' Nation trip. He earned a BS in international affairs in 1968 at Georgetown University, having spent his junior year working for Arkansas senator J. William Fulbright. He was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford between 1968 and 1970. He then attended Yale Law School, where he met his future wife, Hillary Rodham, a Wellesley graduate. The couple has one child, Chelsea. In his second year, Clinton was faced with acrimonious battles over health care, welfare reform, and crime prevention. A health care reform package crafted by his wife failed to gain sufficient support. Clinton had to reduce his objective from massive overhaul to incremental reform.

He was elected President after promising 65 different special interest groups he would cut the military budget and spend every penny on their particular agenda. He was sworn in on January 20, 1993. Four years later, on November 5, 1996, He was re-elected for a second four-year term. His lasting presidential legacy is that he became the only president of the 20th century to be impeached for lying under oath about his use of cigars with 21 year-old White House intern Monica Lewinski. The Clinton Collection President Clinton had little interest in reading, preferring TV and peeking through keyholes for his main sources of information. This resulted in the one of the smallest literary collections ever assembled for a presidential library. Fortunately, a number of the volumes in his personal library were collected before they made it to the shredder, and are preserved for posterity. A number of his more special volumes had the pages mysteriously glued together, but diligent restoration work by the U.S. Library of Congress Archives Restoration Section has opened them up for the public to view. President Clinton took great comfort in reading the classics. Among the greatest treasures in his personal collection were an original March 1986 copy of Playboy featuring the article "Can Jack Kemp Outplay Bill Bradley" It was believed that this was the principal document that made him decide to run for his first term.

William Jefferson Clinton President of the United States
BILL CLINTON, America's last president in the 20th century and only the second president to be impeached in U.S. history, has weathered storms that might have killed most other politicians.
Allegations of marital infidelity, questions about marijuana use and how he avoided the Vietnam War, a real-estate scandal in his home state, flip-flopping on foreign policy, charges of sexual harassment by an Arkansas government employee, accusations of ordering military action overseas to divert public attention from personal troubles, allegations of receiving millions of dollars from Chinese agents for his re-election campaign, and a yearlong scandal over an extramarital affair with a former White House intern that led to his impeachment these and other issues repeatedly give rise to questions about Clinton's character and made the former Arkansas governor one of the most assailed and investigated presidents in history.
But Bill Clinton's charm, determination, razor-sharp political skills, and an unusually long stretch of national economic prosperity helped pull him through a second election in 1996 and kept his popularity high throughout much of his second term.

    Summary of Religious Views:
Quotations: "Sometimes I think the environment in which we operate is entirely too secular. The fact that we have freedom of religion doesn't mean we need to try to have freedom from religion. It doesn't mean that those of us who have faith shouldn't frankly admit that we are animated by the faith, that we try to live by it, and that it does affect what we feel, what we think, and what we do. "On the other hand, it is very important that, as Americans, we approach this whole area with a certain amount of humility, that we be careful when we say that because we seek to know and do God's will, God is on our side and therefore against our opponent. That is important for two reasons. One is, we might be wrong. [Laughter] After all, we're only human. The other is that the thing that has kept us together over time is that our Constitution and Bill of Rights gives us all the elbow room to seek to do God's will in our own life and that of our families and our communities, and that means that there will be inevitable conflicts; so that there will never be a time when everything that we think is wrong can also be illegal. There will always be some space there because there will have to be some room for Americans of good faith to disagree." Remarks at a White House Interfaith Breakfast, 30 August 1993
