Mount Clay in New Hampshire may be renamed for Reagan March 21, 2003 The New Hampshire House recently approved a bill to rename Mt. Clay in New Hampshire’s Presidential Range after former President Ronald Reagan. The state Senate is slated to consider the measure very soon. The 5,533-foot peak, just north of Mount Washington in the White Mountain National Forest, was named for statesman Henry Clay (1777-1852), a congressman, senator, and secretary of state under John Quincy Adams. The New Hampshire legislature’s action seeking to change the name of the mountain runs counter to the official protocol for naming natural features. The US Geological Survey is the authorizing body for such actions and its protocol is not to name a natural feature in honor of an individual until at least five years after the person’s death. It is important for an individual’s record to stand the test of time before his or her name is attached to a natural feature such as a mountain, which is the rationale for the USGS’s five-year waiting period. Also, re-naming of this mountain would result in the loss of historic recognition for the person whose name it currently carries, in this case, Henry Clay. Between 1820 and 1860 this issue was argued by people in the streets and homes and churches of the United States. He was counsel for President Andrew Johnson during his impeachment trial. As President of the New York Bar Association he led movements for legal reform, and fought against Boss Tweed's ring. John Hay (1838-1905) He was the private secretary to Abraham Lincoln, and served as a governmental envoy to Madrid, Paris, and Vienna. He also served as ambassador to Great Britain and as Secretary of State, developing an "open door" policy toward China, and negotiating treaties that led to the construction of the Panama Canal. He was also a noted author of poetry, prose and a biography of Lincoln. Cassius Clay (1810-1903) Despite being the son of a slaveholder, he became a noted anti-slavery leader and Abolitionist. He established an anti-slavery publication, " The True American ". Clay was one of the founders of the Republican Party in 1854. He served as U.S. minister to Russia (1861-69) and helped negotiate the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. He was a relative of the Kentucky senator Henry Clay.
