    Mount Clay in New Hampshire
    may be renamed for Reagan
    March 21, 2003
The New Hampshire House recently approved a bill to rename Mt. Clay in New Hampshire’s Presidential Range after former President Ronald Reagan. The state Senate is slated to consider the measure very soon.
The 5,533-foot peak, just north of Mount Washington in the White Mountain National Forest, was named for statesman Henry Clay (1777-1852), a congressman, senator, and secretary of state under John Quincy Adams.
The New Hampshire legislature’s action seeking to change the name of the mountain runs counter to the official protocol for naming natural features. The US Geological Survey is the authorizing body for such actions and its protocol is not to name a natural feature in honor of an individual until at least five years after the person’s death.
It is important for an individual’s record to stand the test of time before his or her name is attached to a natural feature such as a mountain, which is the rationale for the USGS’s five-year waiting period. Also, re-naming of this mountain would result in the loss of historic recognition for the person whose name it currently carries, in this case, Henry Clay.
If you’d like to make your voice heard on this issue, contact Senate President Thomas Eaton, fletcher@monad.net, State House, Room 302, Concord, NH 03301. Phone: (603) 271-2111.

States' Rights Many people in the South believed that each state had the right to make its own laws and to decide for itself such issues as slavery. Between 1820 and 1860 this issue was argued by people in the streets and homes and churches of the United States. This issue of States' Rights was also very hotly debated in the Senate of the United States. In this exhibit you will have the opportunity to visit with three statesmen of this time who had conflicting interpretations regarding state and federal authority. Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and John C. Calhoun. Start your cyber investigation by reading Politics Activity 2a Use the following chart to record and organize your information on these key issues as you visit with these great statesmen in cyberspace. Read at least one biography and one speech from each of the three men and then fill in the chart. Activity 2b Take the role of one of the three men that you have visited in this exhibit and write a short article expressing your opinion about whether you feel that the Union should try to work out it's differences or should it divide. Be sure to use facts that you gathered to support your point of view. SAVE YOUR WORK TO USE IN YOUR FINAL PROJECT Continue to add to your timeline as you travel through this exhibit.
