ABT. 1740 d. 1819 in Person County, North Carolina William Carver Senior origins have not been documented, but he may have been among a large number of settlers who migrated into Person County, North Carolina in the early 1770's from Virginia. He was evidently living in the Stories Creek area of present-day Person County as early as 1771. The large size of his family suggests that he may have been married more than once. In 1779, William purchased from the State over 900 acres of land in two tracts "on the waters of Stories Creek". William Carver Senior and his family were farmers, raising tobacco, corn and other crops. By 1800, he was operating a grist mill (Carver's Mill), on Mill Branch, a small stream that feeds from the west into Chub Lake (Barnett's Mill Pond) on Stories' Creek. Source: Keith Carver's book .

Great Writings of The Great War
Flanders, by Otto Dix Otto Dix, former German soldier, dedicated this painting to Le Feu (Under Fire), the book written by the French soldier Henri Barbusse. In our opinion Under Fire is the best novel that appeared during the war. Click on the picture to read it online. Below you'll find complete books on the Great War. They are in different formats; most are just plain text, others are html-files or pdf. They come from various sources: the Gutenberg Project Bartleby Eldritch Press BookRags , the library of the University of Kansas , etc. Of a few books we have at the moment excerpts only. As soon as the full texts are available we will replace them. here The books in the list below are already in the public domain. Take your pick (some may take time to load):

Another notable figure of the early period was 'Tommy' Sopwith, who took his flying brevet at Brooklands in November of 1910, and within four days made the British duration record of 108 miles in 3 hours 12 minutes. On December 18th, 1910, he won the Baron de Forrest prize of L4,000 for the longest flight from England to the Continent, flying from Eastchurch to Tirlemont, Belgium, in three hours, a distance of 161 miles.
After two years of touring in America, he returned to England and established a flying school. In 1912 he won the first aerial Derby, and in 1913 a machine of his design, a tractor biplane, raised the British height record to 13,000 feet (June 16th, at Brooklands). First as aviator, and then as designer, Sopwith has done much useful work in aviation. The Mastery of The Air

Steve McQueen - Photographs by William Claxton
Review by Jack Foley FOR many film fans, Steve McQueen represents the epitome of cool. Even in death, he remains an icon for the youth of today and his appeal is as unwavering now as it was in his heyday, when the actor was starring in films such as Bullitt, The Great Escape , The Thomas Crown Affair and Papillon Steve McQueen, by his long-time friend William Claxton (an acclaimed photographer best known for his photos of the LA and New York Jazz scene in the late 40s), is as compelling an insight into the private life of the star as anything which has appeared so far and a genuine must have for any fan. Featuring over 100 black and white and colour images of the star at the beginning of his movie career in the 1960s, this is a fascinating insight into the life of a man who has been described as maverick, a rebel, a tough guy, a loner, a daredevil and a "US original’’. Packed with anecdotes and memories from Claxton, the book also features some breathtaking action shots of McQueen with his motorcycle buddies (he liked to race Triumphs in the desert), in his fast cars, and with his leading ladies and fellow actors.
