Goldfields Introduction Recommended Reading List The content provided here is put together from three books that we suggest you aquire if you wish to get a good understanding of the history behind gold discovery and the Victorian rushes. "The rush that never ended" by Geoffrey Blainey. "Peaches gold" by Bill Peach, and a marvelous book if you can find a copy. "History of gold discovery in Victoria", by James Flett. There is a multitude of books that will give you a lot, especially an understanding of the conditions of the times. These conditions include the social, economic, political and the state of technology and so forth. What has this to do with going prospecting? The answer in a word is research. Some other books, if you can find them, that are helpful are as listed. We have listed them with a letter. This letter codes the book for use. Subject:
JOHN HARRISON EADS
My brickwall is GF John Harrison EADS, b. 1889 in Wayne Co., Missouri and married 1912 same county to Effie Ellen BORDERS. He disappeared from family sometime after the birth of their last child in 1926 (by this time family known to be in Elkhart Co, Indiana). 7 children: Ora (b. 1914 Wayne Co., MO), Leonard, Leota, John Harrison (b. 1919 Graybull, WY), Mary, Clacy, Donaldborn 1926(last 3 born Elkhart Co., IN). We think our GF John Harrison Eads may have run off from family maybe during Great Depression, later possibly ending up back in Wayne Co., Missouri and maybe re-marrying and having another family Any help appreciated and will share what I have! Thanks, Carol Eads Ball

E J BANFIELD . . . am I not free from the cares that obtrude on those of tougher texture of mind who find joy in the opposite to this peace and unconcern for the rewards and honours of the world? Better this isolation and moderation in all things than, racked with worries, to moan and fret because of non-success in the ceaseless struggle for riches, or the increase thereof; better than to bow down to and worship in the "soiled temple of Commercialism" that haughty and supercilious old idol Mammon; better than to offer continual sacrifices of rest, health, and the immediate good of life to appease the exacting and silly deities of fashion and society.
There may be some who, in a disparaging tone, will at this stage of my confessions enter an accusation of impracticableness. To such a charge I would plead guilty; but to those who proffer it, I neither appeal, nor do I fear judgment. These writings are for those who see something in life beyond the mere "getting on in world," or making a din in it.

Primary source materials, selected from the world's most important library holdings through 1920, have been brought together to create the most comprehensive microfilm collection ever assembled on the subject. The Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and the Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe College are the two renowned women's history archives that form the core of the microfilm collection. These extensive archives contain invaluable documentary evidence of women's individual and corporate activities. Other notable collections have contributed incomparable additional resources to the Smith-Radcliffe materials. The Jane Addams Hull House Library provided depth in its coverage of the settlement house movement, and of the activities of women in social reform in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The unparalleled private collection of Miriam Y. Holden offered an incisive look at Medieval and Western European women. New York Public Library and Boston Public Library added rare early imprints and periodicals on women outside America. And the Mcpherson Collection at Scripps College enriched the
