A Lady's Visit to the Gold Diggings of Australia in 1852-53
Ellen Clacy
Chapter I. Introductory Remarks
IT may be deemed presumptuous that one of my age and sex should venture to give to the public an account of personal adventures in a land which has so often been descanted upon by other and abler pens; but when I reflect on the many mothers, wives, and sisters in England, whose hearts are ever longing for information respecting the dangers and privations to which their relatives at the antipodes are exposed, I cannot but hope that the pre-sumption of my undertaking may be pardoned in consideration of the pleasure which an accurate description of some of the Australian Gold Fields may perhaps afford to many; and although the time of my residence in the colonies was short, I had the advantage (not only in Melbourne, but whilst in the bush) of constant intercourse with many experienced diggers and old colonists thus having every facility for acquiring information respecting Victoria and the other colonies. It was in the beginning of April, 185 , that the excitement occasioned by the published accounts of the Victoria "Diggings," induced my brother to fling aside his Homer and Euclid for the various "Guides" printed for the benefit of the intending gold-seeker, or to ponder over the shipping columns of the daily papers. The love of adventure must be contagious, for three weeks after (so rapid were our preparations) found myself accompanying him to those auriferous regions. The following pages will give an accurate detail of my adventures there in a lack of the marvellous will consist their principal faults but not even to please would I venture to turn uninteresting truth into agreeable fiction. Of the few statistics which occur, I may safely say, as of the more personal portions, that they are strictly true.

The Eureka Stockade By TOM O’LINCOLN red_sites@eudoramail.com The gold miners who rebelled at the Eureka Stockade (at Ballarat, near Melbourne) in 1854, and their flag bearing the Southern Cross, have become icons of the Australian left. We should celebrate these revolts against authority. However they can’t serve as models for the left today, owing to the petit-bourgeois nature of the rebellion, which lends itself to nationalist myth-making. Background: the gold rushes in Victoria There were some opportunities for women to break out of the confines imposed on them since Macquarie’s day. We are apt to think of the gold fields as uniformly male, except for prostitutes and entertainers, however this is to focus too narrowly on the diggings. The growth of other industries around the gold fields created employment for both sexes. The most colourful female figure was Agnes Buntine who worked as a bullock driver and carrier carrying goods to the diggings. In later years ‘Mrs Buntine took the first packhorse team into Walhalla, was the first to slaughter a beast there and acted as a butcher for some years.’ (Donkin: 130) In the cities, the sudden shortage of male labour opened up some career opportunities or, in other cases, drove women out to work In Sydney, all the initial appointments of pupil-teachers in the early 1850s went to females. In Melbourne, a sprawling tent city called Canvas Town grew up in Emerald Hill (near what is now South Melbourne). Its population consisted mainly of wives waiting to join their husbands, and others abandoned by men amidst the chaotic social conditions, though some assisted migrants of both sexes made use of the cheap accommodation on offer. Here women engaged in a range of business activities. (Alford 1986).

Gallery The active principle of burning or combustion. A burning mass of material. Burning passion, ardour, enthusiasm. The discharge of firearms. To dismiss from a job. To discharge a gun. It was a defining moment when humankind discovered the means to kindle fire. The cold that managed to creep into every corner - assisted by its ally the wind - could be held at bay. And the darkness had to render up the secrets that it had held.
Food could be cooked and water boiled. No longer a weapon solely held in Nature's armoury, fire gave the human race a quantum leap forward in its development.
Now we describe people as sometimes having a fire within; a passion that burns so bright that its has the power to stimulate others and bring about change. The flames consume and, in the process, transform.
The Pasifika Divas draw on a history of subversive performance to challenge notions of sexuality and gender in Polynesian cultures. Described as 'indulging in extravagence' and akin to Charles Ludlum's 'Theatre of the Ridiculous', their work is full of passion and sometimes confronting.

A Not So Respectable Church in a Very Respectable City
As the title of this potted history of St Peter's suggests, the story of this church could be described as a story of contradictions. One of the themes that can be detected running though its history is a kind of nonconformity, sometimes discreetly veiled and not obvious, at other times quite obvious and deliberate.
Structures
The first part of the building was constructed between June 18, 1846, when Charles Joseph La Trobe laid a foundation stone, and February 1848, when it was sufficiently close to completion for the first Anglican bishop of Melbourne, Charles Perry, to have the letters of his appointment read in the church during Morning Prayer. The first part of the building greeted the influx of migrants to Melbourne who came to the colony in the wake of the gold rush; these included the not particularly well-off group represented in Abraham Solomon's painting . In 1853, Mrs Ellen Clacy, a visitor to goldrush Victoria who subsequently published an account of her travels, had noted that 'Sunday after Sunday do numbers return from St Peter's, unable to obtain even standing room beneath the porch'. Bluestone transepts with seating in galleries as well as at ground level were added, bringing the numbers that it could hold from 650 to 1050 in 1864. A further and final extension at the east end of the church was completed in 1876.

wood engraving after a drawing by Nicholas Chevalier:
St Peter's Church (Episcopalian), Melbourne
This print clearly dates from 1854 or later in the same decade. A comparison between this image and the preceding one shows the extension of the original building through the addition of transepts (the arms in the outline of the cross which forms the church's groundplan). At the same time that the transepts were added, entrances on the side of the first part of the building were removed, as were the fine octagonal pinnacles that are visible at the east end of the church, which faces the viewer in the Strafford print. The bluestone transepts were added to offer additional room for the increasing number of worshippers brought by the gold rush. Ellen Clacy, a visitor to Victoria in 1853 who subsequently published her account of gold rush Melbourne, wrote 'Sunday after Sunday do numbers return from St Peter's, unable to obtain even standing room beneath the porch'. The transepts each seated two hundred more people in galleries, bringing the seating from 650 up to 1050. They were designed by Charles Vickers, but their completion was a protracted affair due to theft of materials by a major contractor on the work.
