The American Civil War in History and Fiction
Compiled by Richard Seltzer

ISBN: 0-931968-34-8
Genre: U.S. History - Civil War
Reviewed by Rochelle Caviness - July 17, 2003 The American Civil War was the most horrific period in American History. It is estimated that over 620,000 soldiers died during the war - this is not counting the death toll related to the general population, nor does it include those that died after the war due to injuries sustained during the fighting. On one day alone, September 17, 1862, nearly 6,500 men died at the Battle of Antietam, which was also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg. Worse, this was a war that tore families apart and literally pitted brother against brother. When the bloodshed finally ended in 1865, it took years for the wounds opened during the war to mend - if they ever have. Even today emotions about this bloody war still run high. In Richard Seltzer's new CD compilation, called

E-M N-Z 1. ALLEN, MERRITT PARMELEE, 1892-1954. The Wilderness Way, by Merritt Parmelee Allen. Decorations by Larry Toschik. New York, London [and] Toronto: Longmans, Green and Co., [1954.] 246p. LaSalle's first two ventures into the northern wilderness which is now Illinois in search of a route down the Mississippi River to France make up the major portion of this novel. The story revolves around the experiences of Laurent Delair, a young Frenchman who joins the first LaSalle expedition before it leaves Quebec, follows LaSalle and Tonty faithfully in two abortive attempts to reach the mouth of the Mississippi and accompanies them in their successful third trek. Opposition from the fur traders of the northwest, severe winter weather, hostile Indians, and discontent among his followers combine to delay LaSalle's success for several years. A fictionalized account of these years, The Wilderness Way is an adequate retelling of the LaSalle story, combined with excellent descriptions of the country and plenty of action to create a rousing novel of America during the late 1600s. Book Review Digest , 1954, p. 12.

Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia
