Joseph Smith's early experiences:
The Mormons have had a fascinating and turbulent history. Its founder was Joseph Smith (1805-1844), a resident of Palmyra NY. His family of origin were called " Seekers " - Christians who were not affiliated with a church, but which respected the teachings of all denominations. In his teens, his mother and most of the rest of the family converted to Presbyterianism. However, Joseph was deeply troubled by the multiplicity of Christian sects which existed in his time. In common with many Christians before and since, he wondered which was the "true" Christian religion . He received his first vision in 1820, at the age of 14 in Palymra, NY. God and Jesus Christ appeared before Joseph as separate entities and told him that all of the Christian sects and denominations were in error and that he should not join any of them. However, he should anticipate a major personal assignment in the future. In 1823, at the age of 17, he received three visitations from Moroni (some texts say Nephi) at the time of the

    Terminology:
Three often confused words are: Polyandry: The practice in which a woman is married to more than one man at the same time. Polygyny: The practice in which a man is married to more than one woman at the same time. Polygamy: An umbrella term encompassing both polyandry and polygyny. The media generally refer to plural marriages among Mormons as "polygamy." However, the practice has always been limited to polygyny. Polyandry has never been allowed. Thus, polygyny is the more precise term to use here.
Origins of Mormon polygyny (a.k.a. plural marriage):
Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , (a.k.a. the LDS or Mormon church) first promoted the concept of polygyny during the 1830s. This type of marital structure involves one man married to multiple wives. The practice has been variously called the Law of Abraham , the Patriarchal Order of Marriage Celestial Plural Marriage, or the Law of the Priesthood.
