Erskine Childers
"No revolution ever produced a nobler or purer spirit'.
John Buchan
Born in 1870, the son of Anglo-Irish parents, Erskine Childers spent his youth in Ireland but left to go to college at Cambridge. He started his working life as a clerk in the House of Commons, where he served from 1895-1910. During his long holidays he spent time sailing the North Sea and the Channel in a tiny yacht, and explored the shoals of the German, Dutch and Danish coasts. He volunteered at the outbreak of the Boer War and afterwards wrote a personal record, In the Ranks of the C. I. V., which was the fifth volume of The Times History of the War in South Africa, as well as two other books exposing the antiquated uses of cavalry against modern armaments. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for services to military intelligence. Although the publication of Riddle of The Sands in 1903 brought him instant success and recognition, it was, however, the only work of fiction he was ever to publish; his attentions were to turn ever more firmly towards politics. Childers became a staunch advocate of Irish Home Rule and was involved with gun-running for the Irish rebels. His yacht, the Asgard, was responsible for carrying arms central to the Easter 1916 uprising in Dublin. In the civil war that followed, he fought in The Irish Republican Army and was court-martialed and shot as a traitor in 1922. His son, Erskine Hamilton Childers, was later elected president of Ireland in 1973.

Robert Erskine Childers was born in London. He grew up in County Wicklow and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a Clerk in the House of Commons before becoming a British Army Officer. Childers was wounded during the Boer War in South Africa in 1900. In 1903 he published The Riddle of the Sands , a prophetic war novel.
Childers became increasingly interested in Irish politics and in 1912 he published The Form and Purpose of Home Rule . In 1914 he smuggled guns for the Irish Volunteers from Germany to Howth, Dublin in his yacht, The Asgard. At the outbreak of the First World War Childers joined the British Navy as an Intelligence Officer and received the DSO in 1916. After World War I Childers resumed his republican activities and in 1919 he was made Director of Publicity for the First Dáil. In 1920 Childers published Military Rule in Ireland and in 1921 he was a member of the Irish Treaty Delegation but he opposed the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. In 1922 Childers was arrested for having a pistol, said to have been given him by

He had been one of the leaders, with Eamon de Valera, of the Irish Republican Army rebellion against the Free State leadership of Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith. His son was later president of Ireland. Childers, shown here in a photo around the time of the Boer War, was a cousin of Hugh Childers, who served Gladstone as First Lord of the Admiralty and Minister of War. As a clerk in the House of Commons, Erskine Childers had free time to sail on his 30-foot cutter Vixen (which must have been the prototype for Dulcibella ) including to the Baltic and Friesland Islands. 26 The Seven Siels SELECTING the very humblest Gasthaus I could discover, I laid down my bundle and called for beer, bread, and Wurst . The landlord, as I had expected, spoke the Frisian dialect, so that though he was rather difficult to understand, he had no doubts about the purity of my own German high accent. He was a worthy fellow, and hospitably interested: 'Did I want a bed?' 'No; I was going on to Bensersiel,' I said, 'to sleep there, and take the morning Postschiff to Langeoog Island.' (I had not forgotten our friends the twin giants and their functions.) 'I was not an islander myself?' he asked. 'No, but I had a married sister there; had just returned from a year's voyaging, and was going to visit her.' 'By the way,' I asked, 'how are they getting on with the Benser Tief?' My friend shrugged his shoulders; it was finished, he believed. 'And the connexion to Wittmund?' 'Under construction still.' 'Langeoog would be going ahead then?' 'Oh! he supposed so, but he did not believe in these new-fangled schemes.' 'But it was good for trade, I supposed? Esens would benefit in sending goods by the "tief" - what was the traffic, by the way?' 'Oh, a few more barge-loads than before of bricks, timber, coals, etc., but it would come to nothing he 'That's the name,' said mine host, 'that's one of them - some sort of foreigner, I've heard; runs a salvage concern, too, Juist way.'

Although the book was not published until 1915 in the United States, Childers in 1903 traveled to the United States, where he met and married Mollie Osgood, daughter of a Boston physician. They had a 50-foot ketch, Asgard

[For this chapter see Map A.]
AN interesting document, somewhat damaged by fire, lies on my study table.
It is a copy (in cipher) of a confidential memorandum to the German Government embodying a scheme for the invasion of England by Germany. It is unsigned, but internal evidence, and the fact that it was taken by Mr 'Carruthers' from the stove of the villa at Norderney, leave no doubt as to its authorship. For many reasons it is out of the question to print the textual translation of it, as deciphered; but I propose to give an outline of its contents.
Even this must strain discretion to its uttermost limits, and had I only to consider the instructed few who follow the trend of professional opinion on such subjects, I should leave the foregoing narrative to speak for itself. But, as was stated in the preface, our primary purpose is to reach everyone; and there may be many who, in spite of able and authoritative warnings frequently uttered since these events occurred, are still prone to treat the German danger as an idle 'bogey', and may be disposed, in this case, to imagine that a baseless romance has been foisted on them.
The only logical alternative is then propounded: to despatch an army of infantry with the lightest type of field-guns in big sea-going lighters, towed by powerful but shallow-draught tugs, under escort of a powerful composite squadron of warships; and to fling the flotilla, at high tide, if possible, straight upon the shore.
