    Erskine Childers
Among the wealth of fascinating manuscripts at the National Maritime Museum are Erskine Childers' log books. Written in a neat copper-plate, they reveal the genesis of his best-known book The Riddle of the Sands and, as Carol Fowler found out, something of the complexity of the man. One of the many books about the author of that ever-popular novel The Riddle of the Sands is entitled The Riddle of Erskine Childers , which comes as no surprise. Childers' novel is as English as a cricket bat and after its publication in 1903 the Edwardian public took the author to its heart as someone who embodied all that they thought was best about the adventurous English character.

    Erskine Childers:
    The Howth Guns
This is the first of a two part series of articles on Erskine Childers.) The more one reads Irish history, the more one realizes that Ireland's independence was brought about by individuals with divergent views, not all of whom would conform to our stereotype of an Irish patriot. Many of us first generation Irish Americans tend to assume that all "good Irishmen" are cut from the same bolt of cloth that is typified by characters played by Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald. In reality, the men and women who worked hard to gain Ireland's independence from Great Britain came from all sorts of diverse backgrounds. I Some were even loyal Englishmen. Erskine Childers was one such individual. Born in England in 1870, a graduate of Cambridge University, and a civil servant who spent most of his adult life working for the British House of Commons as, a Clerk, Erskine Childers was what some would call "gung ho" or a "flag waver." For example, he volunteered twice to serve his country. First, when the Boer War broke out, he enlisted in a horse artillery company that was sent to Africa. And then again in 1914 - at the age of 44, and married with two children - he enlisted in the Royal Navy. This latter decision was a logical choice for a middle aged sailor whose yacht, now on display in the yard at Kilmainham Prison, was once a familiar sight off England and Europe's coastal waters. In fact, Childers had written a mystery novel involving seagoing smugglers and the European coastal waters. This novel so detailed the European coast that some time later the Royal Navy used it as a guide to navigate such waters. For his naval service in World War 1, Childers was awarded Great Britain's highest military honor, the Distinguished Service Cross.

    Erskine Childers:
    Patriot or Traitor?
This is the second of a two part series of articles on Erskine Childers. Part one discussed Erskine Childers' role in securing Howth Guns.) The Irish Volunteers drilled for almost two years with the "Howth Guns" brought into the country by the Englishman Erskine Childers before a shot was fired. When that happened, during the Easter Rebellion of April 16, 1916, Mr. Childers was serving with distinction in the British Royal Navy. But on hearing the news of the Rising, he wrote a cousin cheering the rebels and blaming Great Britain for its years of denying freedom to the Irish. Although many an Irishman, hopeful for Home Rule after the war, cheered the British victory over the fool hardy school teacher Padric Pearse and the poet Joseph Mary Plunkett at the General Post Office on O'Connell Street, Dublin, their sentiments changed quickly owing to Britain's harsh treatment of the captured rebels. One by one, fifteen men were executed between May 3 and May 12, 1916 by British military firing squads for their treasonous act of proclaiming the Irish Republic. The rest of the captured rebels were sentenced to life imprisonment in British goals. Soon pictures of the fifteen "martyrs" could be seen in every pub and shop window. Wartime patriotic displays of the Union Jack were taken down even though there were many Irishmen serving in British and Irish units in France. The slain rebels soon became eulogized in song and story, thereby serving to galvanize a rebellious spirit which bore fruit with the Sinn Fein party's winning more seats in Parliament than the Unionist Party. Rebel Irish Volunteer units began to raid the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) for arms. Once tolerated and even accepted in the local community, the members of the local RIC were finding themselves boycotted in the local pubs and towns. In the Fall of 1918 the Sinn Fein party won the general election in Ireland by a huge majority, but refused to go to London to sit in the Parliament at Westminster. Instead they formed their own parliament, the Dail, and the "Troubles" began.
