61. ArtLex On Frames
The most beautiful part of every picture is the frame. GK Chesterton (18741936),English journalist and writer, Tremendous Trifles, The Troy Theatre, 1909.
http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/f/frame.html
f rame - Something made to enclose a picture or a mirror ; or an enclosure composed of parts and joined together; or to make such things. Pictures are placed in frames to set them off from their surroundings, to honor or decorate them, and to protect them from harm. The frame for any work of art should be designed or chosen with many things in mind, including:
  • If the work is of a certain period, style, region, or evokes one, what types of frames were in use at that time or in that place?
  • What else in the environment where the work will be displayed might have a bearing on how the fram should look? The colors of the wall, furnishings? Other frames?
Many works of art have been reframed over the years. Very old paintings are often found to be no longer in their original frames. When a work is found to be in a frame made or chosen by the artist who produced the work, one is generally wise to retain that frame. A painting's stretcher is also sometimes called a frame. Moldings for picture frames are mitered so that their corners are right angles Examples: Donatello (born as Donato di Nicolo Bardi) (Italian, 1386-1466)

Thanks especially to the donations of Joseph Sprug and Archbishop Robert Dwyer, Mount Angel Abbey Library has a large collection of materials by and about Gilbert Keith Chesterton. What follows is a guide to this collection and to research on Chesterton. Most of these materials can be found on the lowest floor of the library, in the Chesterton section (PR 4453). Gilbert Keith (G.K.) Chesterton (1874-1936) was an English writer, literary critic and author of the Father Brown detective stories. He was born in London and educated at St. Paul's School before studying art at the Slade. But art was always secondary to letters. He wrote regular articles for many newspapers and magazines, took over the New Witness on the death of his brother, Cecil, in 1918 and revived it as G.K.'s Weekly in 1924. He was a man of much geniality but he had a strong antipathy for the squalor of industrialism and disliked both capitalism and socialism, yearning, like his great friend Hilaire Belloc (whose books he amusingly illustrated), for a return to the distributivist economics of the Middle Ages. He sought to undermine secularism with an apologia that took religion as the guide and goal of all thought and action. He found sanity and creativity in a God-centered, not man-centered, universe; in an informed heart, not in rationalism or irrationalism. His 111 books (with about a dozen pamphlets) including essays, poetry, novels, and literary, social and religious studies (he was converted to Roman Catholicism in 1922), reveal his tremendous energy, robust humor and mastery of paradox.

K.," has become the best known member of that group of Catholic writers who emerged in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born in London in 1874 and enjoyed a very happy childhood, an experience which was to color his later writings and attitude to life, an attitude which has aptly been described as "childlike" in the best sense of the word. This is what sets him apart from most "religious" writers, the fact that he approached religious themes, not as a theological expert, but as a layman with his eyes wide open to the wonder of the world. His exuberant and often paradoxical style has captivated many readers and ensured that his works remain extremely popular.
After a period at art school he became a journalist and author, gradually moving towards a more explicit Christianity. He married Frances Blogg in 1901 and they lived in his adopted town of Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. Their marriage was very happy but they had no children.

G.K. Chesterton Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in Kensington, London. After school he determined on a career as an artist and entered the Slade School of Art. While there however he suffered a breakdown and left. He took a job with the publishers Fisher Unwin, reading manuscripts, editing, and handling publicity. Chesterton (1874-1936) was an Englishman who wrote more than 70 books, regaled contemporaries with debates on every subject under the sun, enchanted readers with his Father Brown mysteries, and regarded life as a moral melodrama. In his fine opening assessment of this prolific writer, William Griffin comments on him as poet, columnist, biographer, social theorist and commentator, playwright, mystery writer, travel writer, and religion writer. This volume is part of the Orbis Books' Modern Spiritual Masters Series. Chesterton began life as a liberal Unitarian, progressed to Anglican, and ended up Roman Catholic.
