Addison, Joseph
The eldest son of a cleric, Addison eventually found himself at Oxford (Queen's and Magdalen). He wrote favourable (whether commissioned, or not) articles concerning certain powerful people and their works; he was duly rewarded with a pension of £300 which allowed Addison to travel extensively throughout the continent for four years. With the victory at Blenheim , in 1704, Addison was commissioned to write The Campaign and this led to further political patronage; he was appointed as a Commissioner of Excise Taxes (the only significant taxes they had in those days). The job as a commissioner, presumably, took little of Addison's time and he was left to pursue his writing. While he had contributed to the Tatler (started by Steele in 1709), Addison started his own paper in 1711, the Spectator ("In the Spectator may be traced the foundations of all that is sound and healthy in modern English thought." A Christian for the Twentieth Century
This article is another installment in our continuing Need to Read series. The purpose of the series is to introduce people to authors they might enjoy and to offer some help by way of navigating through the themes developed in the works written by these individuals. It is regrettable that many people who enjoy C. S. Lewis and Francis Schaeffer neglect the writings of Gilbert Keith, or G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936), a man who was admired by both Lewis and Schaeffer. George Bernard Shaw called him a "colossal genius" and Pope Pius XI called him "a devoted son of the Holy Church and a gifted defender of the faith." Until his death at the age of seventy-two, Chesterton was a dominant figure in England and a staunch defender of the faith, and Christian orthodoxy, as well as an enthusiastic member of the Roman Catholic church. In addition to nearly one hundred books, he wrote for over seventy-five British periodicals and fifty American publications. He wrote literary criticism, religious and philosophical argumentation, biographies, plays, poetry, nonsense verse, detective stories, novels, short stories, and economic, political, and social commentaries. An excellent introduction to Chesterton can be found in a book titled Orthodoxy , published in the United States in 1908, and affectionately dedicated to his mother. In

G.K. Chesteron Biography
G.K. CHESTERTON 1874-1936 It is, today, perhaps hard to imagine that GK Chesterton's Father Brown was second only to Sherlock Holmes in popularity during the early 1900's. Whilst Father Brown may not have enjoyed the sustained interest, amongst readers, that has been reserved for the likes of Holmes and Poirot he remains, still today, highly prized amongst collectors and the initiated reader alike. Born in London, 28 May 1874, Gilbert Keith Chesterton was a famously prolific author on many subjects and in many different forms. As with other authors though, we are confining our interests to his criminious works.
The character of Father Brown was based on an Irish priest living in Yorkshire, John o'Connor. Chesterton was 29 when he met O'Connor and their friendship survived until the authors death in 1936.
Father Brown first appeared in the Storyteller magazine, September 1910, in a story entitled 'The Blue Cross'. This was followed on a monthly basis by a further 5 stories. These were later published in book form by Cassell in The Innocence of Father Brown
The character enjoyed immediate success it seems and Chesterton responded by writing twenty-five Father Brown stories over the next four years. This presumably taxed G K Chesterton's devotion to the character and the Norfolk Priest was subsequently 'dropped' for a decade.

The year was 1922. He did not go to Oxford, where so many of his friends went, but to Art Schools, principally the Slade School of Art. He writes of this period of his life in his Autobiography, entitled it, "How to be a Lunatic." Idling at his work, he fell in with other idlers. He dabbled in spiritualism. "I hung on to religion by one thin road of thanks." This road of thanks to a Person for the gifts of life sent revulsion in him from the atmosphere of evil. He loved humanity and he loved things. He loathed pessimism. He had something of St Francis of Assisi about him and he would speak of Sister Rain. He wrote: If the arms of a man could be a fiery circle

September 10 ~  Heart of Man The Man Who Was Thursday
"If s e e d s in the black earth can turn into such beautiful r o s e s what might not the heart of man become in its l o n g journey toward the stars ~ G. K. Chesterton A man with extraordinary heart and intellect, born in London, England , writer Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) drew caricatures of his teachers in school and drifted from art to literature as a young student. Art , like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere," he once said. During his prolific career, Chesterton created over 100 books and articles that included poetry , essays, novels, and biographies. His successful detective-priest Father Brown mysteries were made into films in 1934 and 1954. The popular rotund writer and radio broadcaster was known for his jovial personality and optimism "The really great person is the person who makes every person feel great ," he said. Calling paradox "truth standing on its head to gain attention," his poetic essays examined and celebrated the beauty of life. "I believe is getting into hot water," said the master of irony. "I think it keeps you clean."

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936)
G. K. Chesterton The paternal great-grandfather, grandfather and father of G. K. Chesterton were engaged in the business of selling houses,-house agents, as they are called in England. His father, Edward, married Marie Grosjean, whose family had long been English, but had originally come from French Switzerland. They had three children, Gilbert, born on May 29, 1874, Cecil, five years his junior, and Beatrice, who died in childhood. Gilbert's father distinguished between living and making a living: a successful businessman, he had a dozen hobbies, not the least of them the making of a toy-theatre, and he was widely read, especially in English literature. The Debater Greybeards at Play as well as to revise, edit and counsel the works of others. At St. Paul's Gilbert formed lifelong friendships with the future writer Edmund C. Bentley and with Lucian Oldershaw. In 1896 Lucian was courting Ethel Blogg (anglicized from Blogue) and took Gilbert with him to call. At first sight he fell in love with her sister Frances and, after a courtship extended by his then meager earnings, they were married in 1901. It was Lucian who, in 1900, also introduced the twenty-six-year old Gilbert to the thirty-year-old Belloc . Their reciprocal influence was lifelong as was their friendship.
