The Genus Stanhopea:
was established by Sir William Hooker in 1829, through publication of Stanhopea insignis in the Botanical Magazine. The genus is named for the Rt Hon. Philip Henry Stanhope, Earl of Stanhope, President of the Medico-Botanical Society of London 1829-1837. [See additional notes about the Stanhope family at the bottom of this page.] Stanhopeas are found throughout Central and South America and are pollinated by euglossine bees.
According to Rudolf Jenny, a well-recognized taxonomist for this genus and author of a soon-to-be-published monograph, the genus Stanhopea is allied to the following genera: Acineta erythroxantha superba ); Acropera (Gongora); Archivea; Braemia Cirrhaea images Coryanthes ... CHESTERFIELD MSS.
The Chesterfield mss., 1740-1777, are letters and papers of Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th earl of Chesterfield, 1694- 1773, statesman, and his godson, Philip Stanhope, 5th earl of Chesterfield, 1755-1815, master of the horse. They are bound in three volumes. In the first two volumes are letters to the godson who was very young when the first messages were addressed to him. They contain excellent advice and were written when Chesterfield was no longer active in politics, and infirmities prevented him from participating in the society he loved best. He endeavored to give his godson the training which would make him a courtly, accomplished man of the world. Sixteen of the letters were dictated, but all were signed or initialed by Chesterfield. The amanuensis was James Walsh, Chesterfield's valet de chambre. In six letters, Aug. 20, Sept. 3, Oct. 13, Nov. 20, 1772, Feb. 19, and Mar. 7, 1773, on the second or third page is a postscript signed by Walsh, in the same handwriting as the dictated letters. A seventh letter by Walsh, Dec. 22, 1772, is on a separate sheet of paper. There is also "An Account of the journey from Bretby to London, November the 8th, 1708," by an unidentified person.

a trivial, but appropriate example of why I equate the liberal left to a five-year old who resorts to arguing with strategies such as "I know you are, but what am I?" and using terms such as "doody head" and "stoopid."

MARIE, Michigan (Reuters) Overused cliches, wordy redundancies and hyperbolic phrases including "make no mistake about it" from President Bush were declared banished Wednesday by the university overseers of an annual list of banned words.
Other favored utterances of President Bush sometimes called "Bushisms" such as "material breach," "weapons of mass destruction," and "homeland security," were the tired targets of the New Year's Day list compiled by the public relations staff at Lake Superior State University.

The actual list , as the WSJ points out, doesn't make any Bush references to these statements. So, any attribution of the "coining of the phrases"to president Bush is pure editorializing. Furthermore after looking for some

Meriwether Lewis, 15 July 1806 T he chapter of knowledge is a very short, but the chapter of accidents is a very long one," wrote the famous British memoirist Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield (1694–1773) to a friend in 1753. "I will keep dipping in it," he continued, in reference to his growing deafness, "for sometimes a concurrence of unknown and unforeseen circumstances, in the medicine and the disease, may produce an unexpected and lucky hit." Evidently Lewis was familiar with Lord Chesterfield's famous aphorism, for he himself referred to "a chapter of accidents" now and then, though more often inverted into the sense of a near calamity than as a "lucky hit." Of all the near-calamities the Corps of Discovery experienced, individually or collectively, none was more dire than the one that occurred on 29 June 1805 in a normally dry ravine on the south side of the Missouri River a short distance above the Great Fall. The principals were Charbonneau, Sacagawea, Jean Baptiste, York, and William Clark. Characteristically, Lewis's account of the gully-washer is more dramatic than Clark's own matter-of-fact report.
