Frank W. Thornton
Fayetteville's business history is filled with the names of longtime successful merchants such as Huske, Lilly, Rose, Leak, Hensdale, Stein, Fleishman. But none was bigger for a time than Frank Thornton, who built an impressive store on Hay Street for his thriving dry goods business, one of the largest such enterprises in the state by the 1890s. Thornton came to Fayetteville after the Civil War "as a poor, friendless young man" but built his mercantile business and amassed large real-estate holdings.

Text of plaque Charles Waddell Chesnutt (18581932). “We shall comeup slowly and painfully perhaps, but we shall win our way.”.
http://faculty.uncfsu.edu/jyoung/chesnuttmarketphotos.htm
A drawing of the Market House as it appeared in the late 1800's. A picture of the Market House today, taken from Gillespie Street, the site of the Chesnutt's grocery store where Charles worked as a young man. This plaque in the Market House commemorates Charles Chesnutt. Text of plaque: Charles Waddell Chesnutt “We shall come up slowly and painfully perhaps, but we shall win our way.” In memory and honor of those indomitable people who were stripped of their dignity when sold as slaves at this place. Their courage in that time is a proud heritage of all times. They endured the past so the future could be won for freedom and justice. Their suffering and shame afforded the opportunity for future generations to be responsible citizens, free to live, work, and worship in the pursuit of the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.

http://faculty.uncfsu.edu/jyoung/chesnuttliterarycareer.htm
Charles W. Chesnutt's Literary Career - An Overview Charles Chesnutt lived from 1858-1932. In 1887, he published a short story in a national publication for the first time when "The Goophered Grapevine" appeared in the Atlantic Monthly. This story along with other stories about conjuring, goophering, and working magic were published in 1899 as part of the collection, The Conjure Woman In his conjure stories, Chesnutt may have been working a little magic of his own with his readers. The stories concealed the race of the author so that many of Chesnutt's early readers probably assumed that the author, like the stories narrator, was white. The success of The Conjure Woman led Houghton-Mifflin to publish a second collection of Chesnutt short stories entitled The Wife of His Youth In 1900 Chesnutt published a biography on Frederick Douglass and his first novel, The House Behind the Cedars , a work that had originally been a short story. Set in "Patesville," the novel tells the story of John and Rena Walden, who, like Chesnutt's own father and mother, are the children of a black woman and a white man. At the opening of the novel John returns to Patesville to take his sister with him to South Carolina where he is passing as white. Rena's fate exposes the tragic consequences of the race prejudices that permeate the South, the kinds of prejudices from which Chesnutt wanted to escape in leaving for the North. Anyone who knows this area will immediately recognize Patesville in
