Russian playwright, one of the great masters of modern short story. In his work Chekhov combined the dispassionate attitude of a scientist and a doctor with the sensitivity and psychological understanding of an artist. Chekhov portrayed often life in the Russian small towns, where tragic events occur in a minor key, as a part of everyday life. His characters are passive, filled with the feeling of hopelessness and the fruitlessness of all efforts. "There is not, or there hardly is, a single Russian gentleman or university man who does not boast of his past. The present is always worse than the past. Why? Because Russian excitability has one specific characteristic: it is quickly followed by exhaustion"
(from Letters on the Short Story, the Drama and other Literary Topics, 1924)

version A B C D ... Z Russian short-story writer, dramatist, and physician, born in Taganrog ImgBorder('/i/encyclo/c/chekhov.jpg',200,283,1); The son of a grocer and grandson of a serf, Chekhov earned enduring international acclaim for his stories and plays. His early works, broad humorous sketches and tales published under a pseudonym, were written to support himself and his family while he studied for his medical degree in Moscow . Under this strain he contracted tuberculosis, which ravaged him all his life. Chekhov's first large collection, Motley Stories (1886), brought him critical respect; it was followed by the collections At Twilight (1887) and Stories (1888), from which "The Steppe" earned him the Pushkin Prize. Chekhov's many hundreds of stories concern human folly, the tragedy of trivialities, and the oppression of banality. His characters are drawn with compassion and humour in a clear, simple style noted for realistic detail. In his plays, too, Chekhov emphasises character and mood; his plots describe the desolation of lonely people and the misunderstandings that accrue from self-absorption and desperation. His focus on internal drama was an innovation that had enormous influence on both Russian and foreign writing.

As a short story writer, his reputation was definitively acquired in 1888, when The Steppe won the Pushkin Prize. After a visit to a penal colony in 1890, he wrote The Island of Sakhalin. Then he lived near Moscow, where he ran a free clinic for peasants. His first play, Ivanov (1887) had little success, but the SeaGull and his next plays were acclaimed at the Moscow Art Theater. In 1901, Anton Pavlovich married Olga Knipper, an actress and interpreter of many of his characters. Three years later, he died of tuberculosis. His style, emphasizing internal dramas, mood and characterization, is focusing on the tragicomic aspects of daily events. Anton Chekhov (1860-1904)
Chekhov is one of Russia’s many important literary figures, and one of the greatest playwrights of modern times. He won the Pushkin Prize and he is known for his short stories and his plays, works which often combine elements of both comedy and tragedy. While works reflect the frequently turbulent developments specific to his homeland, their lasting appeal lies in Chekhov’s talent for exploring universally human situations with such grace and dexterity.
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in Taganrog, Russia, near the Sea of Azov, on January 17, 1860. The very fabric of Russian society was permanently altered when Chekhov was only one year old: on February 19, 1861, Russia’s serfs were freed. Chekhov himself was the grandson of a serf, and the overturning of this older social order plays a central role in many of his writings.
When his father’s business failed, the family moved to Moscow, a Russian center for intellectuals. There, Chekhov grew intellectually, although he developed in two different directions. On the one hand, at the age of twenty he attended medical school at the University of Moscow, preparing himself for his lifelong profession as a physician. While at medical school, Chekhov also began writing to help support his family. He worked as a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines; the respect he gained from these often humorous pieces encouraged Chekhov to begin writing serious short stories. Tolstoy, an older Russian contemporary of Chekhov’s, was a great influence on the young writer and medical student. Chekhov was quoted as saying that medicine was his lawful wife and literature was his mistress, and he remained devoted to his two professions throughout his life.

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904)
When one hears the name of the celebrated Russian writer and dramatist Anton Chekhov, the quotations from his immortal stories and plays occur to them. His three most outstanding plays, the Seagull, Three Sisters and the Cherry Orchard are staged in every theater of Russia, studied at school and read by intelligent public. His fame of a brilliant story writer is never-fading, and his plays are shown all over the world. Chekhov influenced a lot of 20th century masters of intellectual prose both in Russia and abroad, and his talent is greatly revered and worshipped by the audience. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born the son of a grocer and grandson of a serf in Taganrog in 1860. After his father fled Taganrog in 1875 because of bankruptcy, Chekhov's family was kicked out of their house by a former lodger. In 1879 Chekhov rejoined his family, now in Moscow with his father, and enrolled in the University to study medicine. He began practicing medicine in 1884 - the start of a sporadic second career which was to bring him much hard work but little income. Chekhov's first career was that of a writer of humorous material and he began contributing to minor magazines under the pen name of Antosha Chekhonte in 1880. By 1882, he was a regular contributor to the other St. Petersburg humorous journal Oskolki with his short stories and sketches, and a column on Moscow life.

Tsjekhov, Anton
Anton Tsjekhov (1860-1904) ble født i Tanarog i Russland.
