Honors Courses
Fall 2004
The following honors courses have been approved for fall 2004. Unless indicated otherwise, each is offered in one section with an “H” preceding the section number. AC 311-H01 Financial Accounting and Reporting I (3 credits)
Block 9 (M) 12:45 to 2:00 p.m.
Instructor: William Read

Prerequisite(s): GB 201 and GB 202 Note: AC 211-H01 and AC 212-H01 are required courses for AC, AIS, and FA honors majors. FI honors majors are encouraged to take AC 211-H01 and AC 212-H01 instead of AC 260. AC 212-H01 fulfills one required course for their major; AC 211-H01 fulfills one business elective. If they wish, other honors majors can take AC 211-H01 and/or AC 212 as business-related electives. Develops students' understanding of the environment in which financial reporting choices are made, what the reporting options are, and how financial reports are used for various types of decisions. Because business contracts (such as debt covenants and incentive compensation agreements) are often linked to accounting numbers, managers have an incentive to exploit the flexibility in GAAP to manage reported accounting numbers. The course illuminates different financial reporting policies available to management, and how the choice of policy affects the financial numbers reported. Integrating accounting, corporate finance, economics, and business strategy to understand how business transactions get reported, the course develops a framework for policy making in corporate financial reporting.

What Makes Literature Today? Prof Edwin Thumboo

National University of Singapore The questions that follow were posed by Dr Lim Kuang Hui, a leading eye specialist. We grew up in the same kampong, made up chiefly of the families of chief clerks, post-masters, land surveyors, inspectors of schools, teachers, court interpreters. A mix of Eurasians, Chinese, Tamils (almost all from Jaffna ) and a sprinkling of Malays, they were all Government servants. We lived in the six blocks of quarters, three of which faced that stretch of Bukit Timah Road between Winstedt Road and Newton Circus; the other three made up Monk’s Hill Terrace. While at school, Dr Lim wrote excellent poetry, a fact he strenuously denies. When he took to medicine we gained an excellent surgeon but lost a poet whose work had striking images, a fine tension, and the rare combination of conciseness and accessibility. The mind and imagination behind them have obviously remained. They account for the probing questions he posed almost off handedly. Their searching reach would require extensive treatment for a full response. They are instead met here by indications of what moves within the terrain they cover.

The Contribution of Early Family History to the Achievement of Eminence
By Robert S. Albert
Abstract

The basic position taken is that although there is no single characteristic, experience, relationship, or value essential to the achievement of eminence, the presence and interaction among a family’s “genetic” possibilities, its inter-generational and transgenerational transfer processes, the particular birth-order of the indexed child and the family’s ability to support this child’s extended immersion in exploring his/her skills and interests enhances their possibility of achieving eminence. Introduction
The upshot of my own efforts has been to convince me that there is an identifiable pattern of parameters reappearing among the family histories of many gifted youth and eminent persons. At first I believed this held truest for the non-sciences. But now I think there is some overlap among non-scientists and physical scientists. For example, with some personality dispositions and work habits, both groups share an uncommonly high rate of special birth-orders, early parental losses, and talent-rich families. On the other hand, there are some regularly appearing differences primarily in terms of personality dispositions (parents’ and own) and their intra-family relationships. Why These Three Men?

  • the aptness or fitness of a metaphor Nicholas Barbules argues that there " is some nonarbitrary reason why we think and act the way we do. When a particular way of adjudicating competing claims about truth, value, or proper course of action has been retained, developed, and refined over a long period of time, there must [sic] be something to recommend it beyond the preferences of a particular group that advocates it; it must be fulfilling a complex set of purposes, and its very persistence over time suggests a flexibility and efficacy that not all alternatives can match.
  • virulence vs benignity It is often asserted that academic honesty is good for the proper function of Science. In brief, this argument posits that scientists must trust each other and each other's reports because no one scientist or small group of scientists can verify independently each observation made by another. Similarly we might argue that the free exchange of reagents benefits Science, or that the liberal dissemination of vital information before publication would benefit Science. At some point we find as working scientists that individually, or in small groups, we cannot operate effectively if our own personal investments are to be given away too freely. In short, the personal costs of too much devotion to the "good of Science" at some point outweight the felt benefits. This realization does not negate the assertions about what is good for Science, but suggests that individual scientists will qualify the practice of that "good".
