Name: V. R. Sonti The Origins of the Jewish People Part 2: Origins of the Jews – Revised Preface, to the Series:
The author ventures his opinion upon this touchy subject, only because a lull in the Warfare between Reason and Faith seems imminent in the United States; as evidenced by the incapacity of devout Christians to impeach a President caught in the most flagrant violation of the popular Judeo-Christian Code. Elsewhere in Christendom, the controversy has expired, deservedly, by ennui: and the example of their aristocracies, social as well as intellectual, ever since the 18th century. Needless to say, Philosophy and Faith are irreconcilable: the best that may occur is an agreement to disagree. One hopes that a truce on these lines will be declared in the very near future. A notable early attempt at the disengagement of reason from belief not founded on physical evidence, is the work of the Kantian philosopher, Hans Vaihinger (1852-1933): " Die Philosophie des Als Ob " (1911) translated by Prof. C. K. Ogden, as "The Philosophy of As If", (see the brief note in Encyclopedia Britannica, 1966). In any case, these comments are simply the author's speculation upon the subject. They do not represent the author's beliefs. Following the precepts of the Buddha's First Sermon at the Deer Park (c. 520 BC), the author has successfully jettisoned his beliefs. Part 2/3 : The origins of the Jewish people.

Authority Record File for Authors in Netsuke and Related Arts Created for The Ultimate Netsuke Bibliography Total of 1,639 Author Records by Norman L. Sandfield A Work in Progress as of September 1, 2003 This is a work in progress, created in the summer of 2003. I encourage you to read it with a critical eye, and share it with friends. Corrections and suggestions are encouraged and welcomed by the author. Please contact him at norman@sandfield.org 1) What is an authority record? An authority record is a collection of information about one name, uniform title, or topical term heading, which allows consistency in bibliographic documentation. Each authority record contains the established form of the heading, 'see from' references, 'see also from' references, and notes. http://www.oclc.org/oclc/man/5411aug/appc.htm Authority records also provide cross references to lead users to the headings used in the Library of Congress's Authority Records catalog, e.g., a search under: Snodgrass, Quintus Curtius, 1835-1910 will lead users to the authorized form of heading for Mark Twain, i.e., Twain, Mark, 1835-1910. It is important to note that authority records do not represent materials in a Library's collection. Rather, they are a tool used by librarians to organize the library catalog and assist users in finding those materials. A recent reviewer (in a library publication) noted that users may find helpful information in Library of Congress Authorities, such as an author's middle name or a company name change.

Rudy Kousbroek's book In de tijdmachine door Japan describes his 'court journey of the year 2000'. Kousbroek travels the same route as the Dutch between 1609 and 1858 did from Nagasaki to the court of the Shogun in Edo (Tokyo). From what you can see today, he describes the history based on the various journals and books that still exist. 'Sightseeing in the past', as he calls it himself. Unfortunately only available in Dutch. Very worthwhile reading if you're interested in the subject. Reinier Hesselink's books Twee spiegels op Cambang and De gevangenen uit Nambu provide an interesting overview of the daily life on Deshima, and the relationship with the Japanese authorities. The latter one also reconstructs the political scene around the Shogun (Tokugawa Iemitsu) in Edo, and the effect on the Japanese-Dutch relation.

Collected Works of Basil Hall Chamberlain: Major Works
    Introduction
An Amused Guest in All : Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850–1935) “To have lived through the transition stage of modern Japan makes a man feel preternaturally old; for here he is in modern times, with the air full of talk about bicycles and bacilli and ‘spheres of influence’, and yet he can himself distinctly remember the Middle Ages.” Things Japanese (5th rev. edn, 1905) The story that emerges from this period is that of a sickly youth with bad eyesight and chronic bronchitis, both mentioned so often that one tends to suspect a degree of wilfulness about it all. The letters that he was to write from Tokyo to Lafcadio Hearn, who was living on the Japan Sea coast, would constantly harp upon the same subjects – bad health and the dreadful weather – and yet he was to outlive most of his contemporaries. Study at Oxford and work at Barings were eventually rejected in favour of that doctor’s panacea, travel, and he arrived in Japan, surely more by accident than by design, in May 1873. He was twenty-three. As a natural linguist, he plunged straight into learning Japanese, both spoken and written forms. Soon after his arrival he was offered an appointment teaching English at the Naval Academy, a post which he maintained with the occasional break for foreign travel from 1874 to 1882. As a foreign employee (

Contents Introduction Publication Details B. H. Chamberlain (Southampton 1850 - Geneva 1935) remains one of the most important Western scholars and interpreters of Japan. Arriving in 1873, a time when the field of Japanese studies was starting to become established among foreign residents, Chamberlain was to stay in Japan till 1911. A natural linguist, he immediately engaged himself in Japanese studies while occupying a series of teaching positions, most notably as the first Professor of Japanese and Philology at Tokyo (then Imperial) University from 1886 to 1890, where he introduced the principles of general linguistic theory and comparative grammar. His lectures and studies on Japanese grammar, etymology and morphology, as well as on the historical and comparative linguistic aspects of the Japanese, Korean, Ryukyuan and Ainu languages, were all major advances. His Handbook of Colloquial Japanese (vol. 2), for example, is recognized as being one of the best and clearest treatments of Japanese grammatical categories even today, when so many more teaching aides and textbooks exist.
