Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin (as opposed to brass, an alloy of copper and zinc) to which other elements may be added in smaller amounts. A durable material, bronze can receive various patinations, such as gilding. It was used for the casting of artillery and utilitarian objects such as mortars, but in the fifteenth century it came increasingly into use for the casting of sculpture. Many European cities had bronze foundries, but Florence saw the first true flowering of bronze sculpture. The main monuments there are the two pairs of bronze doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti on the Baptistery Donatello
Collectors' taste for bronze statuettes
coincided with an upsurge of interest in classical antiquity . The Mantuan Antico earned his nickname with highly refined reductions of Greco-Roman antiquities. Many of the first makers of statuettes were trained as goldsmiths, like Antico and the Paduan Riccio.

Perseus Beheading Medusa Benvenuto Cellini Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence Bronze 18 feet high Jpg: Excite image search "Medusa" was a Gorgon and originally a beautiful maiden, but she desecrated the goddess Athena's temple by sleeping there with Poseidon. Outraged, Athena turned Medusa's hair into living snakes and any man who looked upon her face would be turned into stone.
From: The Columbia Encyclopedia: Sixth Edition The gods, however, loved Perseus. Hermes gave him a curved sword and winged sandals, and Athena (who had her own run-ins with Medusa earlier) gave him a mirrorlike shield, and Hades a helmet that made Perseus invisible. Thus armed, Perseus slew Medusa. While fleeing the other Gorgons (Medusa’s sisters) Perseus asked Atlas for help. Atlas refused, and Perseus, by means of the Medusa head, promptly turned him into a mountain of stone. On his way home Perseus rescued Andromeda from a sea monster and married her. When he arrived in Seriphus, he killed Polydectes (that wicked guy that was making the moves on his mother) and his followers. He then gave the Medusa head to

His sculptures, most of them executed in the later Florentine period, include the colossal bronze bust of Cosimo I (Bargello); the bronze bust of Altoviti (Gardner Mus., Boston); the Nymph of Fontainebleau (Louvre); the life-size Crucifixion, a white marble Jesus on a black cross (Escorial); and the renowned Perseus with the Head of Medusa (Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence), a beautifully wrought bronze statue surmounting a marble pedestal lavishly adorned with statuettes and carvings. See translation of his autobiography by J. A. Symonds (1888; many later editions).
