Cellini, Benvenuto
(1500-1571) Goldsmith and worker in bronze, born Florence; died there. He worked exclusively as a goldsmith, the leading one of his day, until he visited the court of Francis I, in , when he began casting bronze statues. His masterpiece is the colossal "Perseus" of the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, executed for Cosimo de' Medici, . The story of its casting is vividly told in his famous " Autobiography ," an egotistical but picturesque record of his adventurous life. It includes his description of the siege of Rome, , where he claimed to have killed the Constable de Bourbon and wounded the Prince of Orange. Among exquisite examples of his work are coins executed for Paul III and Clement VII, an elaborate jeweled morse, or brooch, for a cope of the latter, and the intricately wrought golden salt-cellar of Francis I, now in the Vienna museum.

Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571)
He was born in Florence, exiled when still young because of his fighting and dueling, and studied briefly with Michelangelo in Rome. He was a skilled sculptor and metal worker. Returning to Florence in 1545 he produced his major work of art, a statue of Perseus with the head of Medusa. He also wrote his autobiography, which made him more famous than his artworks and was the basis of the opera Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz. Needless to say, perhaps, he is very much the hero of his own text.
We always try to locate images of the specific works discussed in the journal. As you might expect, this is often impossible. Failing that, we seek out similar or typical work by the artist. The images in our files are linked below. Perseus Neptune and Ceres (salt cellar)

We learn much concerning Benvenuto Cellini from his autobiography. He was a man of lusts, and lies, and poetic fancies. He was a great braggadocio but he was also a true artist and the greatest goldsmith of his time. As if to prove to the world that he was capable of executing more than the miniature pieces which he did in gold, he worked for years to model and cast the Perseus which still stands where he placed it, in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. A fascinating account of his casting of the famous statue in bronze is to be found in his autobiography. For his subject he chose the Greek hero Perseus who was assigned the task of slaying the fearful Medusa, she with the hair of poisonous snakes. So horrible was Medusa that one who looked upon her was turned to stone. To accomplish the perilous assignment he was assisted by the gods, who gave him a polished shield in which he could see Medusa without looking directly at her, a magic sword, a pair of winged sandals, and a cap of darkness which made him invisible. The contrasting horizontal and vertical positions of the two bodies could have diffused the interest of the group. The sculptor avoided this by drawing the crumpled body of Medusa into an approximate square atop the ornate pedestal.

http://www.metopera.org/cellini/berliozandbenvenutocellini.html
BERLIOZ AND BENVENUTO CELLINI David Hamilton is a frequent contributor to Opera News magazine and the Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast intermissions, was editor of The Metropolitan Opera Encyclopedia, and is on the Graduate Faculty of The Juilliard School. The fifteen months of 1831 and 1832 that Hector Berlioz spent in Italy, as holder of France's Prix de Rome, made a deep and lasting impression. Italy's landscapes, people, art, and antiquities joined the works of Virgil, Shakespeare, Goethe, and Beethoven as primary inspirations for his music. The most vivid witnesses to this "Italian connection" are the long-familiar Harold in Italy (1834), for viola and orchestra, and two operas that, after long isolation on the fringes of the repertory, have in recent decades grown much more familiar: Benvenuto Cellini (1834-38) and Les Troyens (1856-58), both of which the Met has staged to observe the bicentennial of Berlioz's birth. During his Italian sojourn, Berlioz may well have encountered the art of Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571), the brilliant Florentine goldsmith, engraver, sculptor, and scapegrace. But only back in Paris did he read, in a new French translation, the celebrated (and doubtless embellished) autobiography of the artist he would describe as a "bandit of genius." He surely felt great sympathy for Cellini, whose confrontations with reactionary authority and with jealous, convention-bound rivals resembled his own, and in the spring of 1834 he decided to base an opera on the Italian artist. (The suggestion may have initially come from the writer Alfred de Vigny, who, though too busy to write the libretto, later vetted the work of Léon de Wailly and Auguste Barbier.)
