I say that the art of sculpture is eight times as great as any other art based on drawing, because a statue has eight views and they must all be equally good.

Cellini, Benvenuto (1500-1571) Sculptor, goldsmith, memoirist, and flamboyant pederast , Benvenuto Cellini is one of the greatest artists in the history of Western art. He was the ultimatethat is to say, the lastRenaissance artist, for the free exploration and celebration of the sensual (particularly the homoeroticism ) that inspired his genius and was a hallmark of Renaissance Florentine culture were soon aborted. Benvenuto Cellini was born in Florence at the peak of the Italian Renaissance. Apprenticed to a goldsmith, he excelled in that art. In fact, he was so successful that he was called upon to fulfill major commissions throughout Italy and France. Indeed, he traveled so much that until he was forty-five years old, he never lived longer than five years in any one place. Sponsor Message.

Cellini, born in Florence in 1500, was a sculptor and goldsmith, working during the period of the Renaissance. He was perhaps the greatest goldsmith of the Renaissance, a little less distinguished as a sculptor. Even so Cellini was for a short time the student of the great master Michelangelo. Cellini worked in several cities in Italy including Rome, Sienna, Pisa, and Bologna. He executed various commissions for medallions bearing mythological themes.
While in France, which he spent under the service of Francis I, Cellini created the famous salt-cellar of gold , depicting Poseidon and Amphitrite as well as other sea deities. This is one of the most important pieces of the goldsmith's work to have survived from the Renaissance.
Cellini was known as a man with a quick temper, and was often landing himself in trouble with the law or being thrown out of various cities. He wrote a rather racy autobiography in 1538 which gave a somewhat embellished account of the his adventures and deeds. Nevertheless the book has been widely read since the 18th century when it was translated by the English writer Goethe. It provides a vivid picture of the daily life of a Renaissance craftsman, and gives some insight to the political and social atmosphere of the 16th century.

Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571)
Benvenuto Cellini, a Florentine goldsmith and sculptor, who became one of the leading artisans under the Medici Rulers of the Middle and Late Renaissance. By Sonal Panse, 2/16/2004
The Renaissance, also known as the Age of Humanism, was one of the most astonishingly productive and creative epochs of European History. For the first time ever, individual artists took centre-stage by the sheer dint of their personalities and genius, and opened up whole new vistas of painting, sculpture and architecture. The significant events of the period – and there were plenty of those in terms of political disorder, conflicts, epidemics, etc. – had surprisingly little adverse affect on these artists, and in fact, often courted and welcomed by both warring factions, they moved about with flamboyant impunity.
One such talented, celebrated figure was that of Benvenuto Cellini, a Florentine goldsmith and sculptor, who became one of the leading artisans under the Medici Rulers of the Middle and Late Renaissance. A larger-than-life character, whose highly engaging memoirs recreate a notable portrait of the ideological and social times of the sixteenth century Italian city-states, he apparently never had a dull moment in all his remarkable years. His travels took him from Florence to France, with many detours and stops in between, having extraordinary escapades and witnessing first-hand some of the most turbulent events in Europe.
His next destination was France, where he was very warmly received and remained for five productive years, becoming a distinguished member of the Court and executing several famous works - the bronze lunette relief of the Nymph of Fontainebleau (Louvre, Paris), an elaborate gold and enameled salt-cellar for Francis (Museum of Vienna), large silver statues of Jupiter, Vulcan and Mars (now lost), various bronze heads, and silver vases. True to character though, he could not refrain from becoming enmeshed in several controversies with the French, particularly incurring the enmity of the King’s mistress, Madame d’Etampes, and thereby soon outliving his welcome. In 1545, receiving the timely invitation of Duke Cosimo I, he returned to Florence and this time stayed put in his native land.

CELLINI, BENVENUTO Besides the works in gold and silver which have been adverted to, Cellini executed several pieces of sculpture on a grander scale. The most distinguished of these is the bronze group of Perseus holding the head of Medusa, a work (first suggested by Duke Cosimo de Medici) now in the Loggia dei Lanzi at Florence, full of the fire of genius and the grandeur of a terrible beauty, one of the most typical and unforgettable monuments of the Italian Renaissance, The casting of this great work gave Cellini the utmost trouble and anxiety; and its completion was hailed with rapturous homage from all parts of Italy. The original relief from the foot of the pedestalPerseus and Andromedais in the Bargello, and replaced by a cast. Among his works of art not already mentioned, many of which have perished, were a colossal Mars for a fountain at Fontainebleau and the bronzes of the doorway, coins for the Papal and Florentine states,, a Jupiter in silver of life size, and a bronze bust of Bindo Altoviti. The works of decorative art are, speaking broadly, rather florid than chastened in style. Besides the works in gold and silver which have been adverted to, Cellini executed several pieces of sculpture on a grander scale.

An artist of genius who had a terrible character, which was often to lead him into trouble with the law. He wrote a treatise on sculpture and the art of goldsmithery (Florence 1568) and a picturesque autobiography (1558-66) published in Naples in 1728, which is an excellent description of the artistic climate of his times and has inspired both the theatre and the cinema.
The Perseus in the Loggia dei Lanzi
He studied in various workshops in Florence, Siena, Pisa and Rome. It was Rome he fled to in 1519 after being involved in a brawl and he was to remain there until 1527. He then stayed in Florence and Mantova, returning to Rome to open his own goldsmith's workshop in 1529 under the protection of Pope Clement VII: he carried out works inspired by the drawings of Leonardo, Michelangelo , Raffaello and Filippino Lippi.
Cosimo I de Medici at the Bargello
He travelled to France (1540-45) and created several works there, all of them dispersed today except for the bronze Nymph in the Louvre and the famous gold and enamelled Salt and Pepper Holder (1543) today in Vienna, where reminders of Florentine sculpture are united with the typical refinement of the Mannerist culture of Fontainebleau.
He returned to Florence in 1545 and sculpted the bust of Cosimo I , (Bargello), Ganymede on the Eagle (Bargello) and the famous Perseus for the Loggia dei Lanzi in Piazza Signoria , a work in typical Mannerist style.
