A churchman, musician, soldier, spy, diplomat, and writer who was the center of scandals, usually involving women. Today any man who is an adventurous, uncontrolled, and irresponsible lover may be called by others a Casanova... Casanova was born in Venice, Italy, probably on April 5, 1725. Expelled from school for scandalous conduct, he went to Rome in the service of a cardinal. From then on he was almost continually on the move over the whole of Europe until he finally settled in 1785 at the chateau of Dux in Bohemia. There he served as librarian until his death on June 4, 1798. During his adventurous life Casanova managed to do a good deal of writing, including librettos for a number of operas. He published 'History of the Government of Venice' in 1769 and a translation of Homer's 'Iliad' , the great Greek classic, in 1775. He also produced one of the earliest science fiction works

Casanova's memoirs are an unreliable account of his adventures with 122 women - according to his own counts - but they also provide an intimate portrait of the manners and life in the 18th century. His countless projects, employments, and initiatives took him through the courts of Europe - in Paris he was employed to do some espionage work by Louis XV and from London he tried to sell the secret of a cotton red dye to his own country. "I saw that everything in the world that is famous and beautiful, if we rely on the descriptions and drawings of writers and artists, always loses when we go to see it and examine it up close." (from History of My Life Giacomo Casanova was born in Venice. His father, Gaetano Casanova was an actor, who also directed some plays. He had married in 1724 Giovanna Maria (Zanetta) Farussi, an actress, and a perfect beauty. In his childhood Casanova suffered from nose bleeds, and his parents thought that he would not live long. Strong women dominated his life: his mother and a witch who helped him to stop the bleeding. Later in his life he occasionally dressed himself as a woman. Casanova's parents left him in the care of his maternal grandmother, Marzia Farussi, and went off to London. Zanetta and Gaetano returned to Venice in 1728. Casanova's father died in 1733 but Zanetta turned down all her suitors and decided to support her children on her own. However, she soon left Venice and ended in Dresden, where she was a member of the Comici Italiani ensemble.

During his travels Casanova made and lost fortunes and encountered many famous personalities such as the pope Voltaire Rousseau and Mozart Born in Venice to a family of actors, Casanova started his career in Padua where he studied for the priesthood. His licentious behaviour there resulted in expulsion whence he travelled to Rome to become the secretary to a cardinal. More scandals followed and he moved on to Venice where he made his way by defrauding wealthy socialites with occult tricks a la Cagliostro . The Inquisition in Venice convicted him of witchcraft in 1755 and he was led across the Bridge of Sighs and imprisoned in Il Plumbi ("The Leads"), a famous prison attached to the doge 's palace. He escaped and fled to France where he sensationalized the exploit by a pamphlet that made him into a minor celebrity. In Paris he used the name Jacques Casanova and styled himself the "Chevalier de Seingalt". There he made a fortune by starting a lottery. This success was not to last and his restless genius led him to other countries and adventures. Impecunious at the end he retired in 1785 to become the librarian to the Count of Waldstein in the castle of Dux, Bohemia (now Duchcov, Czech Republic) where he died June 4, 1798.

Giovanni Giacomo Casanova
AKA: The Great Lover
Venetian Spy for France
Known to the world as the great lover, Giovanni Giacomo Casanova was many other things, not least of which were a sorcerer, an occultist, and an espionage agent. The son of theater people, Casanova was born in Venice. Like his parents, he was nomadic, whimsical, and unpredictable. He became an ardent lover at an early age. Through family friends, Casanova secured a position as secretary to Cardinal Aquaviva but he soon tired of religious court life and joined the Venetian Army at Corfu. The military regimen bored the romantic Casanova For more than twenty years, Casanova wandered through the capitals of Europe, from Paris to Constantinople (presently Istanbul), supporting himself as a gambler, a violin player, a cabalist. Most of his money was made through alchemy. He claimed that he could turn iron into gold but his magician's art consisted of nothing more than slight-of-hand tricks. He returned to Venice in 1755 where he was imprisoned for practicing sorcery. He escaped in 1736 and fled to Paris where the foreign minister to King Louis XV Cardinal Francois de Bernis , who was an old friend, employed him as an espionage agent.

Danas svakog pustolova i neodgovornog ljubavnika ljudi èesto nazivaju Casanovinim imenom. Giovanni Giacomo Chevalier de Seingalt Casanova, kako glasi njegovo puno ime i prezime, roðen je u Veneciji 1725. godine najvjerovatnije 5. travnja. pokazivao znake izražene inteligencije .
